Original owner of an '06 Titan SE, 156,000 miles. Getting a "Service Engine Soon" light. My OBD II reader says P0430 Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2.

I have verified O2 sensors are functioning normally, but I do have a couple of known issues:

1) I had aftermarket muffler and exhaust installed about 10 years ago. I have since lost both due to the muffler just crumbling away. I have not replaced anything yet, so I'm practically straight-piped (my HOA hates me.)

2) Leaking radiator cap. Self-explanatory, and I will be replacing tomorrow.

3) I still have the original spark plugs in the truck. This is a bit embarrassing, as I am a mechanic and I know better than to let it go this long.

That being said, I want to change my plugs tomorrow. I am a heavy-duty diesel tech, but don't know hardly anything about automotive, except what translates between the two. What should I be getting with the plugs? I assume platinum plugs? Do I need to be changing the wires with them? Any tips or advice I should know going into this, or is it fairly plug-and-play?

I appreciate the help, in advance.

This is the factory original plug in my 2010, I imagine they are probably the same.

I bought the plug that was recommended but I think I paid about $8 each.

The P0430 may be due to a failing catalytic converter. I had aftermarket b-pipes for a number of years with OEM manifolds. When I put on the JBA headers the catalytic converter in the b-pipe didn't seem capable of keeping up. I ended up replacing it and no more check engine light.

Aren't the cats part of the header on these trucks? I'm avoiding changing the cats just because of the cost associated with replacing the header. Also, if my cats are bad, wouldn't I hear like a whistling sound from the exhaust?

Yes the primary cats are part of the exhaust manifold, but if they are breaking up your need to replace them right away. The parts from the cats will get sucked into the engine and ruin it. Headers are way cheaper than an engine.

This is a known issue on the Titan and the manifold/cat design is the issue. Those things are junk no matter what brand and sit down when you price them. The Cajun Stage 1 header package is what you need to fix the issue for good. Call me with any questions....jeff

I've been running the NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs in my truck and have been really pleased.

In a nutshell;
The manifold cracks, air gets pulled into the exhaust stream through the crack.
The O2 sensor reads the air and tells the Ecu to pour in more fuel. The engine is now running rich, even though it thinks everything's kosher.
The rich condition causes the catalyst to plug up, which causes the catalyst to run hot. The catalyst then begins to disintegrate. As the cat breaks apart it is actually possible for bits of it to enter the cylinders and cause damage.
Once the cat is rendered ineffective you get a code.

Your B pipe cats are not monitored by the Ecu, so there's no need to keep them around.

If you love your truck I highly suggest following Cajun's recommendations to a "T".
