Hey guys I got a dumb question because I know the proper answer is to take it down and repaint it entirely but, here goes.

I have an 05 Galaxy Black Crewcab 4x4 that looked really good when I first bought it. Here we are two years later and the clear coat has all but failed on the hood, tops of fenders and roof. I was washing it yesterday afternoon after gettin some new tires and noticed that when its wet the paint looks great so it got me thinkin. I know it isn't the proper way but can I simply sand down the remainder of the clear and re lay the clear? I know this might not be a permanent solution and will prob fail again eventually, but man it looks terrible and I cant afford to completely redo it.

Heres a pic when it was new to me and looked pretty good.

How the paint currently looks

this was while washing it. When its wet it looks much better, not perfect but way better than day to day
Land vehicle Vehicle Car Motor vehicle Grille

any advice on this is appreciated.

Same problem as my '08 KC LWB SE- and you can see the color coat is gone in spots (just like mine). The problem with two stage metallic paint is, once the clearcoat is gone, the color layer gets too damaged to be re-coated. You can do what I did: find a painter who'll redo your roof, a-pillars and hood only. They can feather the paint into the sides and charge you less. It's not perfect by any means, but at least those big spots get properly painted.

Id like to repaint it, just trying to buy a house so the budget it tight. Thats why i was hoping just a simple scuff and clear would since it looks so good when wet. but I think youre right unfortunately. I had a feeling that was the answer i would get, just was hoping from anyone with experience if that might work temporarily ha.

I agree. thats where I was at too. I lost motivation to wash it, but the rest of the paint looks perfect so I still do. Just really wanna get the hood and roof in shape. truck runs flawless, just doesn't reflect that in the paint department.

Definitely just find a good auto painter and get the hood and roof reshot.

I wonder if parking in the sun too much exacerbates the clear coat issue. I've never had this problem on any of my vehicles, ever, but my house is covered in heavy shade and my cars are usually parked in the garage.

I think I spent around $2500 doing the whole front end, hood, and roof about two years ago because it was pretty bad. Now my doors and bed need it too.

Well sucks that im not the only one with the issue. I wondered about repainting it only to have the rest of the paint job fail also. Guess I either live with it or pony up for materials and get it handled.

Im not sure about paint durability being a matter of perspective. I mean its a common failure on most all these titans, not just some. Sucks that the clear coats are so thin or something. I'd say some brands are just worse than others.

Paint durability is a matter of perspective. Check out any Dodge, Ford or Chevy truck board and you'll find plenty of paint complaints there as well.
i dont know man, the paint on my dodge seems to be holding up pretty good. I dont even wax it like i should.

Man, that really sucks. Do you guys all live in places with sun 365 days per year? I guess I'm lucky I live in the cloudy and cool Pacific Northwest because neither my 04 or 05 Titan looked like that.
