Cracked Manifold(s): Polling for possible root causes

All,

I just joined the "Cracked Manifold Club". I have a replacement coming for the cracked right manifold on my Titan. The truck has 63,000 miles on it.

It got me to thinking: this seems a bit soon to bust a manifold. But then I was chatting with a buddy who owns a Tacoma, and his is busted also. So it's not just us.

I thought it might be interesting to look for common items among us of The Cracked Manifold Club. Maybe it might be valuable in providing Nissan with some feedback toward a small design change if necessary. When you vote, look at the 80% duty of your truck. I mean if you go hunting for Hemis, then yeah, it's racing. Although we're good law-abiding citizens and don't really do that. (Wink, wink) For towing, if you tow more than just an occasional weekend U-haul, mark that. Hope that helps define it a bit.

It'll be interesting to see how the poll turns out.

On a side note, I first thought that perhaps car makers are going a bit light on the manifolds to save weight, or that maybe the expansion coefficients are just different enough that the manifold gives up after a shorter period of time.

I've owned a whole bunch of cars and trucks, so the cracked manifold doesn't bother me. It's just something that happens. Everybody gets a busted manifold from time to time. In all the cars and trucks I've owned, I've replaced seven exhaust manifolds. So this is nothing new.

Thanks for voting.

nissan has been cracking right side manifolds on their trucks since they started putting V-6 motors in. Extremely common on d21 trucks. I blame it on the exhaust collecing on the right side of the truck causing undo stress on the rear most manifold bolt. ask around to anyone with an old truck. GREAT that means mucho dinero to fix. Cause if you dont get the bolt out then you have to remove the head.
Catalytic converters are surely to blame. Having the cats a couple inches essentially from the exhaust valves causes a buttload of heat in the exhaust manifold. Hence pretty much all newer vehicles cracking manifolds. Get rid of the cats, get rid of manifold cracking, to bad its not a viable solution for most though.
Mine cracked (both sides) before 20,000 miles. The dealer said that this is very common and also said that if they inspected each truck that came in for an oil change that about 1/2 would have them but the driver would not notice.

When my truck was getting done they were doing 1 other Titan and 3 Armadas for the same problem.
Mine is leaking now but i am too busy to take it in. I will try later this week. I also had an 4cyl 89 toyota 4x4 xtra cab and it too had a cracked mani. I replaced it with a header and WOW big difference. I think they are just using cheap metal in the castings to save money.

So do we have to keep replacing them with cheap stuff or is there something else?
well they are under warranty until 80K. After that i believe the cheapest headers are the JBA shorties at 490 + install. but then add in a set of high flow cats and you are close to 600+ install.

I hate to replace something thats junk with more junk.I don't really want headers either so I guess if it happens I'll just pray it's before 80k.
My right side exhaust manifod cracked at 45,000 miles and the dealer replaced both admitting that it has been a problem for the Titan's. They indicated that the "new" manifolds were made better.
maybe the metal is coming from China?!?!?!!? Just kidding!!!! Sorry to hear all your problems.

Those guys are having issues with the Lead based materials.
UPDATE: Replaced, and WOWEEEEEEE! YEE HA!

Maybe they ARE made in China, who knows? As I understand from the dealer, the part is subbed out so it could be made anywhere.

But the real reason I'm posting is... They've been replaced, they replaced the O2 sensor, and...

WOW!! The truck has woke UP!!! :ninja:

I canNOT believe the difference in the way it's running, it's like I suddenly have about 80 HP more! I normally drive on the conservative side, but this has made a Maxima driver out of me again!! The truck is a REAL hotrod now! I just can't keep my foot out of it...:rockon

YEE HA BABY... Watch my tail lights, you jerk Tundra driver, you know who you are... :jester:

Best news of all? Towing to the coast and back, I got 10 MPG through all those mountains, where I usually get like 9 or even 8.5! First tank around town has been 14.5, but that's been with all this tire-chirping. I have GOT to start behaving...

Substandard materials is what my bet is......
Sounds like your truck could have went into "safe mode". The ECU detects an issue of that nature and magnitude and it cuts back tremendously. This can also happen while towing under extreme loads.

I too had an 89 toyota xtra cab 4x4 with the 22re 4 cylinder....the exhaust manifold was fine up until about 90K...then it let loose one day. It cracked so bad that had it not been changed...cops would have pulled me over..that loud. Replaced it with a complete new exhaust header/new high flow cat/high flow muffler and all new stainless tubing. I sold the truck with almost 200K on it :) I will probably be replacing the titans manifolds with JBA short tube headers....

I also would like to replace the cats with high flow versions that need to be welded to the JBA's anyways....anybody know which ones are sized correctly for the job ?
I just joined the cracked manifold club too. Right side problem but they replaced both sides. Looks like a big pain to change them so if you hear excessive valve noise on accelleration have it checked out. Service guy knew what to look for. It may be a common problem I think...04 titan 36K miles. I pull a 7-8 K trailer 8-15 K miles yearly, engine gets pretty hot on mtn roads.
I think it is important when running the engine hard, like when towing a Travel Trailer on the interstate, when pulling off for gas or stopping to let the engine idle for a couple of minutes to reduce the rapid cooling of the manifolds. JMHO
ahhh yes u can add me to the cracked manifold club now too.
over the weekend i noticed a nice ticking sound coming from the driver side, damn u nissan with your ****ty manifolds, on my 2000 fronty that was the only problem both side had to be replaced
I usually dont bump a thread...

But when I do its from 2007
