The dealer suggested I order a new front driveshaft for over $500 (with labor), he said they don't replace just the u-joints anymore - just the entire item assembled. I guess they were having problems disconnected the shaft from the joints so they just sell it all together now.

The option was to take it to a drivetrain specialist where they could give me a second opinion and probably be able to just replace the u-joints.

Advice or thoughts?

Sounds to me like the service writer's at the dealer now have their full credit card bill from the holidays and are trying to drum up some cash flow to pay them.

Yeah, there has been some pretty amazing stuff posted lately. Would you like an IPDM, ECM, and A/C control module with your $500 U-joints today? Today's special $2,200. How about an axle seal for $900? Leaf spring shackle for $750? Transfer case seals for $1400?

Sounds like you have a ****ty dealer. I would call the BBB on them, maybe they should know what is going on so someone else does not get taken.

I would go to your local drivline shop as said before and uy both u-joints on that end. Yes get the servicable ones with grease zerks. I have not bought u-joints in a while but would guess a quality one from a drivline shop would not go more than $13 each.

I had one replaced from the dealer I purchased from (completely worn out and they missed it on the state inspection). They had no trouble putting one in. It's aftermarket no doubt but its been fine. BTW- the u-joint IS available from Nissan.
