My '06 Titan sits sometimes for a week or so without getting started. I have company truck so the titan doesn't get to be driven as much as i would like.

Anyway, here's the deal. I had the oil changed recently at the dealer, as long as it's in warranty I'm letting them do the change, and it then sat for about 10 days in the garage. I went out yesterday evening and cranked it up and it hammered for about 10 seconds on start up. I shut it off and checked everything. Full of oil, new filter, no leaks. I cranked it up again and no noise and oil pressure is up to normal. Didn't think to look at oil pressure the first time. It's never done this before so I'm wondering is it possible that this happened from sitting such along period between starts?

I have had fords big block V8's that did it in the past but I have never had a noise out of this engine before now. It's got me a little concerned.

Anyone else ever experienced this? If so did you figure out the cause? I'm wondering if a possible stuck valve in the oil filter maybe...?

No, it shouldn't do that after sitting for a week. My truck once sat for 3 months straight and it started right up without any noises like that coming from the engine.

It could be a stuck anti-drainback valve, but that's highly unlikely if it's a genuine Nissan brand oil filter. Are you sure they used the correct oil filter? Maybe they used a different one for another application which doesn't have the anti-drainback valve or something?

If it only happened once, I wouldn't worry about it. If it does it again, I'd definitely take it back in and have them check it out.

Stories like these are one of the reasons why I like to change my own oil. Of course, not everyone has the ability, time or workplace to do it themselves. If you change it yourself, you'll always know it was done right. Plus, I always like to prime the new filter with oil before I put it on which is better for the engine at first startup after an oil change.

What kind of oil do they use? Different oils will give you different startup noises. This is really not a joke. Sitting for 10 days could also cause startup noise.

Sometimes when you change your oil, it's common for some noise to be made before it gets pumped through the system.

You should be ok.

Yes, it has the same Nissan filter it always has. Same number as always. The oil is 5W30 Valvoline that I always specify. It was 8F this a.m. and i cranked it with no problem. I'm starting to think it was just a one time thing. thinking I might go ahead and change the filter just as a precaution in case it might be faulty.

That sounds like a good idea. You never know, maybe one of the techs or parts guys dropped the filter and dislodged something inside.

Due to the extreme cold temp and it sitting for 10 days, the oil settles to the bottom of the engine. When it is started the oil is thick and takes longer to get circulated to the top of the engine. Fairly common. Nothing to worry about unless you see an obvious issue like leaks.

My valves/rockers used to clatter on start-up but during the hot summer. I stoped using the recommended light weight oil in the summer and it quit. Probably nothing to worry about unless it starts to do it all the time.

Well I wnet ahead and changed the filter and let it sit for another week. Cranked it yesterday evening with temp about 25F and it never made a sound that was not ordinary. Had my wife watching the oil gauge as she cranked it and I had the hood up listening for anything out of sorts. Oil pressure is good and all seems to be well. Hopefully it was a one time thing.
