8437 Views 64 Replies 26 Participants Last post by  layer1
Anyone with these headers seeing any rust on them? I live in NY and I can see rust all around where the tubes meet the flang. anyone else have this problem they are ceramic coated but I guess that did not help.. If so anything I can do about it I would not think these things should rust after only 5 months of being on..

Man I wish I could take pictures of my headers, but I am leaving for afghanistan and my wife left a week ago to move to fairbanks alaska. I started this thread and I do not even have pictures up on it. I have only had my headers on since january of this year. My headers look very very similar to the first guys pictures maybe a little worse.
That guy would be me.

Ouch. Less than a year and they are worse than mine.
On another note everybody is saying thy want 304 stainless headers. Well here is your chance!! ... I obviously cant quote pricing here but feel free to PM me for more info.

They don't get on the forums much.....You'll have to contact them directly.

Well, that was kind of the point...
And I sent the PM because it's what they said to do - not my idea...

Everybody says 'contact them directly' but they sure make it difficult.
Who exactly is this 'them' ? I've seen a couple of first names posted - no last names, no phone numbers, no email.

Go to their website - no phone number for sales or marketing.
Not one but two phone numbers listed for 'Customer Service' - one in California, one in Washington State. Which is correct?

I'm trying to find the name and phone number of 'the guy' to call to get this ball rolling.

One question I had for them that can maybe be answered here. Certainly the information is nowhere to be found on the product information page...

Does or does not the header set come with O2 (A/F) sensor bungs for the ECU? I understand they're 'offroad only' parts - I'm OK with that. I just need to know if they're actually set up for my application (pre-'08) or if I'll have to arrange for additional fabrication.

I'm not sure who the Doug Thorley "rep" that posted on here is, but it's my understanding that DT does make a SS version. I have a feeling the "rep" was just another retailer posing as an employee for DT. Regardless, he or she split once folks started questioning DT's quality control regarding the ceramic coating. They aren't sponsors on here so that may have been an issue too.

IIRC, a few members on here ordered the SS version directly from DT. The headers come with all the hardware and O2 bungs needed to complete the install. The only thing you may have to do depending on your mileage is pick up some manifold gaskets and new metal b-pipe flanges. No need to extend wires like on the Stillen's or modify primary's to clear the manifold nuts like the OBX's. Hope this helps...

now, you can plug in the upper O2 sensors with ease. what about the lower one that would need moved to the CAT in the B-pipe? You wo9uld still need to extend the wires to make no CEL's. I have the stillen B pipes and they have the bungs before and after the Cats. Right now, I have the front ones used like the OEM. I would move them to the rear of the Cat to make it "legal" and for no CEL's.

I would like the 409 version also with cermic coating. But 409 rusts also, and I though it was not as strong and thick as regular mild steel.

Here is my thing and I know you will pay, but T-304 aircraft grade stainless is best because you can nick it, sand it, do whatever and its not going to rust. I had Borlas on my cars before, all winter, no issues, always polished right up!

Maybe Borla would make one for the titans?

If the coating is done correctly inside and out any version of SS headers will out last coated mild steel headers. IIRC, there is no 409 version of headers for the Titan...

If anyone is thinking of buying LT headers for the Titan I would assume they'd do the research and know that the b-pipes would need to be modified or replaced. Since you already have the Stillen b-pipes you shouldn't have to extend any wires. With the new offering of the Berk Technology b-pipes skipping on the Stillens is a now a no brainer. :) There's tons of info on installs and more than enough info info out there.

Sadly, I doubt Borla would make any additional parts for the Titan as it's really not their niche...

Berks. Sitting on my shelf right now.

I have a Borla cat-back and I do like it.
I think there's a better chance of Nismo coming back before Borla makes a Titan header...
I like the stainless concept because I see what PA winters are doing to everything (and what a nightmade I had getting the fasteners out of the stock B-Pipes to do the Borla install, which is what put me on the path to the Berks in the first place, and has now got me looking at stainless headers).
Even stainless, which I like for a variety of reasons not strictly relating to corrosion resistance, I'd have Jet-Hot coated for the thermal issues. The additional corrosion resistance is a plus.
Besides my general unhappiness with Stillen, I like the DT tri-Y approach because I don't much need top-end power and I believe the tri-Y makes more torque in the rev band I actually use than a true equal-length design. (Our V8's don't have equal-spaced firing sequence per bank anyway... Some do, but not us.)

So I'm still left with my original question: what's the name and number at Doug Thorley to call direct to make stainless headers happen ?

DougThorleyHeaders.Com should have all of that......That website Doug Thorley.com is just a dealer for DT Headers.

Yes it should.
Been there - it's pretty lame tho. Evidently not updated since 2007.

Titan headers don't show up when you search by application. You can pick them out of the general list of a couple-hundred other header products.

And there is a general 800 number - but of course still no names.

I'll call the general 800 number and see where that leads me. But they do make it a lot more difficult than it ought to be...
If and when you do get a hold of them I would pose the question if they cover warranty for rust within a year of purchase. If they say they do, GET IT IN WRITING!

I'm not bashing Doug Thorley in anyway. They make great products and some products are just OK. But when my headers rusted and were bubbling under the ceramic coating it only tells me the process was incorrectly done. When I called up their customer service and inquired if they would be willing to look into this, they were OK with it. However, I got a return call from them 30 minutes after we hung up and got an ear full on a thread I did not start but posted in. They also went on to tell me I was bashing their reputation and hurting their business, which I didn't. At this point I lost complete respect for Doug Thorely. I never heard a word back from them and they wouldn't take my calls after this. So, I took the headers off and sold them.

I will never purchase another Doug Thorley product again mainly because of their customer service.

Like I said, ask about warranty and if rust is covered under it.

first customer service is #1. if you are not satisfied, in this day in age, the world knows who you are and will black ball you. So, they should have just said, ok, send them back, we will mail you new ones and provide an extended warranty satisfaction guarenteed.

I have a reconditioning/detail business and I tell people if you do not like what you see, you don't pay! the better the work, the more clients and more profit.

thorley might want to offer a T304 that others have no made for these trucks. the rpice is high, but these things will last forever. they could be swapped off vehicles over and over.

I don't like to bash companies either. Even Pacesetter has improved products. I have one of their Cat back systems for my 1992 SE-R. it fit perfect and hangers and all perfect. But, I know they were farming out to mexico, because I saw that stamped on a piece for a Toyota Corrola I put on. I had to drill out the openings, gaskets crap, poor way to install O2 sensor, not a bung to screw into. crazy. lost faith. But they improved when talking to people later on.

I think our feedback is a good thing, that improves the quality. they might get mad, but, constructed feedback is good.

I ordered the SS version about a month ago off the DT site from nick. I for one was very happy with their service. I can't comment on performance or rust issues because I won't have them installed until the 1st. I'll keep you guys posted after that

Don't need to ask, the policy is clearly stated, at least on the dealer's page. Rust is not covered.
Lifetime Warranty
This is why I am only interested in an UNCOATED STAINLESS header I can take to JetHot myself.
Of all you guys on this thread that have installed the DTLT's did any of you have any fitment issues? Having to extend the b-pipes or anything? Just wondering before I install tomorrow?
None bro".. Stop procastinating..lol

I ended up, eventually, with your headers. I got them coated locally and doubt I will see any additional rust issues here in the south.
The place I used could not coat the inside, however.

Since I got a good deal on new hi-flow cats, I had the shop shorten and reuse my B pipes.
If I hadn't got such a good deal on cats myself, I would definitely have gone with Berk.
Nice! Those DTLT's look so fresh with the coating! :)
