Hi all

So i rented a trailer to tow my car to the track this weekend and it was all fine untill i connected the trailer back at the end of the day and noticed my electronic brake controller isnt detecting a trailer. All of the lights on the trailer works but my brake control cant control the electronic brakes on the trailer. So i was wondering if there was a fuse on the truck that may of popped that controls the electric brakes? The control module loads up perfectly find and its just plugged into the factory harness, so im trying to figure out if the fuse that is on the trailer blew or on the truck. Anyone got any ideas?

Okay, dumb answer (because I've done this one). The connector wasn't plugged all the way in, and I mean all the way in. With mine, I can have everything working but the brake controller not showing a trailer, that means I didn't get it plugged in all the way so back out and wiggle and push more.

I've had that happen. No brakes on the trailer as I pulled away and did a brake check. The 7 pin sure does like to be in there good and tight. I did also clean the leads on both the male and female sides and added some dielectric grease for good measure.

Im going to try again with a different trailer tomorrow. I rechecked all the connections on the truck and it looks very solid, the pins are straight and non corroded. Im just hoping that i was the trailer that blew a fuse.

i actually tried that when i was at the track, cuz i thought it was a loose connection or something. But i just relized something, my trailer brake controller can go up to like 14volts and the trailer only supports 10. I checked my settings and it was at 14volts so im guessing once i plugged the trailer in it just blew the fuse for the trailer.

blew the fuse for the trailer.
The trailer brakes aren't supposed to be fused. Otherwise if the fuse blows, you have no brakes! The cab controller is made to handle a short. Hook it up that way. The trailer brakes take so much current that they look like a short anyway. They're supposed to read under ten ohms, each. If they're hooked up right - in standard series/parallel, they'll actually read about 2.5 ohms at the connector. This is if you have standard electric brakes on your trailer.

Who told you it's supposed to take 10 volts?

All systems - even the expensive electric over hydraulic (disk) brake systems work on vehicle voltage, which can range to over 15 volts. But it's not the voltage that's important, it's the controller's ability to deliver the amps necessary to get the brakes activated.

Update: Turns out the trailer had a dead battery, the owner told me the lights didnt turn on when he rented it out yesterday. I also connected my truck to another trailer and trailer brakes and lights functions like its supposed to do.
