Team,
I had the same experience as many with my titan a while back, ie. Engine sputtering, stall, shudder, sluggish, hard to start, dying, shutting down, low rpm, dies out etc.
After experimenting with lots of things that would normally address these symptoms, nothing worked, and it got dangerous to drive.
Here were the things I suspected or thought might be involved:
ECM failure
ECM reboot
Plugs fouled
Plug mounted coil failure (very expensive to replace)
Engine codes of several kinds
cracked manifolds
Failing air flow sensors (Anemometers)
Clogged filters
Improper adjustments made automatically to engine by ECM
MAF sensor dirty
I chose NOT to pay the ridiculous "trouble shooting" fees of between $80 and $150 for someone to tell me how many possibilities of root causes there were and that it would be a "buy and replace" effort until it was solved.
I visited this forum and others and found the solution that worked for my truck.
It was so easy and so inexpensive that I had to share this as a singular thread to help others out.
Just do this fix, no matter what. It takes 3 minutes and costs $4!!!
I bought mine on Ebay as an OEM part: NEW NISSAN OEM TITAN ARMADA XTERRA IPDM ECM RELAY FRONTIER GENUINE 284B7-CW29E
Just search out that part number.
I bought an extra one to keep in the glove compartment.
Its been over a year now and the truck runs better than it has for the last 5 years previously.
My truck info:
Mine is a 2004, early serial number. I got 220,000 miles on it thus far.
Only issue I have had was a cracked exhaust header on one side. I had both sides replaced with DORMAN brand and no issues since then.
Good luck!
Brent
