Exporting a Titan: Q&A

First of all, great site. I have been viewing this site for a couple of months and it is definitely the best (if not a little emotive at times). You really seem to know your stuff and discuss matters on a level that dispels the myths that all PickUp drivers are ********.

I live in Sweden, and saw my first Titan (probably the only one in Sweden) in the flesh last week. It was a Silver CC. Other than that I couldn't tell you much more. If anyone else who has imported to Europe drop me a line.

I am seriously thinking about exporting a Titan to Sweden in the coming months. I've done one export before (a VW New Beetle in 1997) and it was a breeze. However, at that time I lived in the UK.

For those of you who are interested, here's what I anticipate will happen.

The Buy
Thanks to your discussions, I think that I have enough information to know what is a good price (no more than invoice less rebate). I'm looking for a dealer within 500 miles of the Baltimore Docks. Long may the US Dollar remain weak. The change in FX rates over the last 9 months between the Euro/USD means that your prices have dropped by about 27% to us Europeans (you'll see later why I need every cent saved).

Question. Given the car will be for export I have a dilemma either (i) insist that the truck is sold ex-sales tax and I drive to the docks or (ii) have the truck first registered in the US. The pro's and cons are as follows: (a) from my knowledge manufacturer rebates are only valid for US registered vehicles (b) the universe of dealers who will sell ex-sales tax is limited and I will probably not get the best pricing and (c) the registration will take about 6 weeks which will delay my indulgence.

The Modifications - Please Comment

- Rear Indicators (Repeaters): these must be separate to the brake lights and be the correct colour (usually yellow/orange)

- Front Indicators (Repeaters): ditto - also in Europe we need side repeaters (orange) on the front of the vehicle.

- A Red Rear Fog Light: on my VW I changed one of the reverse lights and had this fixed to to fog light switch (we only need 1 reversing light in Europe). Question: which of the XE, SE, and LE have a fog light switch on the console as I don't wish to add an aftermarket switch to my nice clean dash.

- In Sweden, we need front and rear driving lights (I think this is the same for Canada). This means that as soon as the ignition is on (whether or not the hand brake is released) front and rear sidelights must be on. Any ideas how easy this modification will be?

- Tires: Need to match the advertised top speed of the vehicle (odd one this as I can't believe that it would be any other way for US vehicles). Also why we are on the topic of tires, can anyone recommed a set of studded tires for snow/ice use at a reasonable price

- Speedo: must have kph as well as mph

- Brake Fluid level: must have a console indicator to indicate low levels

The Taxes I Pay
You guys will s**t yourself when you see what I pay:

- Special new car tax (20% of purchase price and shipping costs)

- Sales Tax (25% of purchase price, shipping costs and new car tax)

There are ways of avoiding some of these by parking it in a low tax country for 6 months such as Germany. Once I've paid these, then the real taxes start in the form of gas (USD 5.50 per gallon). Humour me but I am correct in thinking that I multiply a US Gallon MPG by 1.20 to get an Imperial Gallon MPG.

Other Questions

- I've seen from the previous threads that the CC is better for child seats. We have 2 kids under 3 years of age, the oldest prefers to be in a rear facing in the front passenger seat. Is this feasible with the passenger side airbag deactivated. Also with a front bench seat, is it safe to have it in the centre seat area or do Nissan advise against this?

- The tax I pay will be based on the total purchase price. For that reason I wish to have all my options listed on a separate invoice. Is there any reason a dealer would object to that.

- In Swedish cars we have a male power-in socket on the body that allows a lead from the electricity main to be connected to the truck without draining the battery. This allows the cab to be pre-heated using a seperate fan heater for about 20 mins prior to driving (temperatures are about -30F in winter). Has anyone done this mod?

- for the DVD player, has anyone manged to "chip" it to play all regions?

Lastly, I'd make my purchase this afternoon if Nissan would drop in a medium size diesel in the engine bay. Dare I say it in this forum but Toyota make a worldbeater 4.2 turbo diesel in use in the Landcruser that would be perfect. Any news on diesels?

I know I've put to you guys a lot of questions. Many thanks in advance if you can help on any of them. Keep up the good work.

Once again great site run by intelligent people :)

I may not be the best person to answer this your questions, but I'll give you my 2 cents worth

Dealer locations - you can go to the NissanUSA.com website to find dealer locations in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc..

Rebates - I think that your are correct - US residents only

Sales tax - don't have clue

Modifications

Turn signals operate separately from the brake lights, but flash in red in the rear, orange for the front

Side repeaters - you will have to install

Rear Fog Light - you will have to install (only in the front) - if your buy the factory fog lights, the switch on the turn signal stalk (along with the headlights)

Driving Lights - my CC is not equipped with the full-time driving lights - I'm sure that either Nissan or the aftermarket can find you a kit - I'm sure a dealer in Canada might be able to help you out

Tires - I have Goodyear Wranglers on mine from the factory, I'm sure that speed rating is correct - studded tires can't help you on that, we don't get enough snow in Arkansas to worry about them

Speedo - has KM and MPH

Brake Fluid Indicator on the dash - never heard of this on any North American car or truck

Other questions

The CC has much more room in the back than the KC, but you lose bed length. Personally with kids that are 12 and under, I always keep them in the back seat. Even though the front passanger seat air bag will not activiate until a certain weight is placed on the seat (125 pounds, I think - I might be wrong), the safest place for kids is in the back - plenty of room for car seats in the CC

Taxes - again depends on the state where purchased and the dealership

Pre-Heater for the engine - don't know, this far south, we don't use them maybe someone from the northern US or Canada can answer

Don't have a DVD player in mine (yet)

Hopefully this has helped you a little

for the pre heater, you would have to buy an autostart system (Average US $200)

i'm sure you can work something out with the dealer about keeping two invoives but I doubt they would even consider it.

You can get a temporary license if you don't want to permanently register it, if you just want to get it to the docks. When I was thinking of getting a Ford instead of a Titan, I was going to buy one in New York and drive it back to Texas. New York offered a 60 day transportation permit, which I would have used to drive it back to Texas. Most states do offer some sort of temporary permit for transportation.

There are no rebates on the '05 at this point in time, so I don't think that would be a factor, unless you are wanting to wait until later in the model year when the 05 does have rebates. Or if you are looking at an '04 now.

[edit] if you want a block heater, you may be better off buying a Titan in Canada as I don't think they offer block heaters in the US.

[edit 2] the sales tax, in the US, is paid to the state of registration, so if you don't register it here, you shouldn't have to pay sales tax.

I don't know if it would help but there is no sales tax in the state of New Hampshire, its not close to Balitmore but within 50 miles of Boston.

Many Many Replies for Your Replies So Far

You guys don't disappoint in your replies!!! I am genuinely grateful for bringing up my confidence level on that purchase.

- I am pleased to hear that the front & back repeaters require no mods. This was going to be my biggest worry. I can get the work done on the side repeaters in Europe (hopefully)

- I am still unsure as to the relationship between the fog lights and the turn signal stalk. Is the fog light switch present in the SE whether or not fog lights are fitted or do I need to buy an aftermarket part for a truck without foglights?

- Apart from the cost of doing business in Swden (add at least 100% to the US price), Nissan Sweden are prohibited from poaching Nissan's from other markets for the same reason Nissan Canada would let me take a Nissan from Canada for export - (they refused on the grounds that it breaches their contract with the HQ). Thanks for your suggestion anyway.

- I like the idea of a 60 day temporary permit, does this require a US license or can I operate it on an international driving license.

The 04's seem quite appealing as (i) the depreciation in the aftermarket makes little difference to the international market (ii) the rebates on the 04's seem to be continuing for the time being (ii) there's nothing I really pine for on the 05's that couldn't be purchased in the aftermarket. However, for quality issues I would like a late model 05. Is there a VIN threshhold that I should be searching for that might imply better quality.

Once again, you guys have been unbelievably helpful. I am still about 60 days away from making a decision. Many thanks.

EB

Thanks for the compliment to the board members.

You need to buy the Nissan Foglight kit that comes with the switch on the stalk and install it.

Look for build dates on '04's (Its on the drivers side inner door area) from Aug/04 onward.

The temporary transportation licenses vary by state. 60 days was what they offered in New York. In Texas, it's only 15 days. You'll need to inquire in the state of purchase.

EtoileBrilliant, you mentioned buying a Titan 50 miles at least from Baltimore, I believe there is a carmax around the Washington DC/Baltimore area, White Marsh. Those guys I bet would be very good to deal with. They have many stores in the Chicago area where I live. I've delt w/ them before (never bought anything from them, but came very close) ,but very, very impressed how they do business. They are a no worries, no hassle dealership. They are a chain of stores mostly known for selling used cars, but they do sell new Nissan's around that area. etc..... Their website is www.carmax.com. Take a look. You can use zip code 60432 if you need it to get started. You can click on new cars, select Nissan and the Titan, city and market would be Washington DC/Baltimore, location would be White Marsh. They sell their Titans I believe $500 under invoice. (They also honor Nissan's rebate of $2000 on the Titans) You can special order a Titan if you want. (you can really do that at any dealership) Good Luck!!!

The US (and Canada) are the only countries that market the Titan. That's probably why he has to buy one here. The Titan was designed and built for the American market. That's not to say you can't import one but, I don't believe they're for sale elsewhere.
