So there has been some talk on here about the 2017 Titan's 2.937 rear gear ratio and whether or not it is good/bad or sufficient for towing with the new 7 speed transmission. I thought it would be fun to compare it to the '15 Titan with 3.357 rear gear and its 5 speed and the Tundra's 4.30 gearing paired with its 6 speed transmission. Below are the final gear ratios 1).

Overall the new 7 speed in the Titan matched with the 2.937 rear gear seems to be a very competitive performance/towing option making minimal sacrifices for MPG. The new 8 and 10 speed transmissions in the Chevrolets and Fords seem pretty impressive though.

It appears that the 2.937 gear matched with the new 7 speed translates to about a 3.55 in typical "domestic rear gear speak". Yes I know Chevrolet doesn't offer a 3.55 but the Titan's ratios fall between the Chevy's 3.42 and 3.73. So again the new Titan half ton should be very competitive from a towing/performance/offroad standpoint especially considering its best MPG figures are coming from one gear offering. Whereas Ford/Chevy are quoting their best MPG figures from their 3.15 and 3.08 respectively.
