First 3 things I need for new Titan to increase HP and Gas Mileage?

36662 Views 99 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  JauntyBishop
I am brand new to the world of Titans (or any V8 truck for that matter) and I have to say I am, for the first time ever, truly proud of my vehicle! I feel like an F-ing man!!!

I am looking for the first 3 things I should do to it to not only increase horsepower but also hopefully help with fuel economy as well?

I do currently have a K&N air filter but it's not a cold air intake, and also a Flowmaster 40 series exhaust.

Just FYI... When we are discussing Up/Rev terminology the ROM file is what is downloaded into the ECU & the maps are what you choose between with the CC buttons. I don't want anyone getting confused... :)

yea after i posted this I found it. I am worried I just threw $500 in the water. No power gain sofar. ill log some data and see what is to do.
There's just no way that you could not notice a difference... When you floor it from a stop the right rear tire should start screaming! LOL :)

If you used the CC to set the tune into Map1 & saw the SET light flash on the right side of the cluster, then more than likely you forgot to add "WOT enabled" in the details of the order form. Send Up/Rev an email stating what happened & i'm sure they will re-write the tune for you.

The first day i got my Up/Rev installed on the T i went out to a stretch of road for testing, i forgot to take it out of stock map. LMAO! I thought i'd been had too for a minute, till it figured out! :)

Thank you for the info. There is such an overwhelming number of users happy with UpRev that I find it hard to believe I didnt gain anything. And truely, I dont think I did...

I spoke to Jarred yesterday about this and he said the WOT restriction is only in place upto 15 mph. i told him if I gun it in 1st gear my rpm's onl;y go up to 5500 before awitching to 2nd and then it shifts to 3rd at 6000 rpm's. I am convinced the WOT is still on. I also asked about the 2 degree timing advance and he said they didnt advance the timing because the timing is already very aggresive from the factory. I am going to use Cipher to add 2 degrees and see what I get.

I am in the process of logging some city driving, highway driving and 0-60's. i will mail that to them and request them to remove the WOT restriction again and then report back.

Oh BTW I am in the process of gutting my cats I took off the passanger side gutted that one then I couldnt get the driver side off for there was a rounded out nut. i got a nut splitter from Sears and will destroy that tonight.

Surprisingly, while driving with one gutted cat and ne normal one the truck sounds quieter and the faint resonating noise from 2600 rpm's to 3 grand is gone...

That is weird... You should definitely notice the difference going from stock tune to Up/Rev! Sounds to me like Up/Rev is being more conservative on their tuning or something? What you said about the RPM's is sounds normal. Up/Rev doesn't change the shift points.
Gutting your secondary cats will definitely help with performance also!

Be sure to setup the correct parameters to log & go to options, make sure its reading in F* & not C*, & et it to record 0-60!

Keep us posted! :)

same thing with me...didnt know to switch it...he** that was 4 years ago..lol

I will keep you guys up to speed but last week thursday I did a 0-60 launch and I thought the heavens fell down on me with an awe inspiring loud clunk and heavy shaking from the rear end. I thought Jesus came back to earth but after investigating I found I destroyed my diff.

So now its in the shop for True Track install.
wow you have good luck. You dont have to lie to us. We all know how that you wanted tru trac anyway. No need to make up stories lol

yea i really wanted the TT but i didnt think the diff would go boom. i didnt try to break it. i just drove the T exactly like I drove my 2002 Tundra, (oh did i say that out loud?... LOL)

Guess it was bound to happen.
lol at least this one stops when you tell it to unlike Toyotas lmao

I used to have an 02 Taco and loved it. I wish I had it still!! I love Toyota and Nissan

LOL Yep...stupid spider gears. I saw it happen first hand @ the track one time! Jnasty & I were lined up to race, he did a huge burnout, then when the light go's green i took off & he didn't move, diff went boom! :teethmast I think there is video of it somewhere? It didn't sound good...
Yea thats is never fun!!!! Now that i have my T back I love my TT. It drives different from stock!!!

I had the opertunity to race my friend in his Duramax this weekend and let me tell you, that was fun!!!! That is a mean sounding truck. The turbo on that beast almost gave me a hard on!!!(Sorry am I allowed to say that?)

We went from 0-80 mph from a red light and out of the line I chewed him up!!!! I jumped ahead probably 3-4 car lengths and just enough to het to 60 before him. OMG but when that turbo started spooling he shot past me like I was looking for parking. MAN I cannot believe that truck is that fast!!!! I do have my uprev and I am using it but the is absolutely no differance in my tuned map and my stock map. If I have to choose I would say the stock map is a little stronger than the custom one.

I am working with Omar at Uprev to fix this. I think I might have either an exhaust manifold leak or a gasket leak so i might be pulling the trigger on a set of headers. Which would you guys recommend? Would you go with high flow cats too????

Shipwrech, let me know if you get WOT from 0 MPH. Mine is still set at 12 MPH even though I asked for it to be completely removed.

That just seems strange to me... I remember the day i first uploaded my Up/Rev base tune. I went out to test it out & did a WOT 0-60 & felt no difference from stock! Then i remembered i had to switch out of stock map! After i got the set light for my 93map i did another 0-60 & WOW what a difference!!!

I will let you know. Right now I dont think its removed i am not sure.

Yea i only have 3 maps and I tried all 3. my map 1 is my custom suppose to be stronger map, map 2 is valet and 3 is stock. 1 and 3 is no different and 2 has the RPM limit at 2500rpm's. Little disapointed though.

I am looking into headers for my truck, any suggestions please?

Stillen or Doug Thorley. There are a lot of people unhappy with Stillen overall. Some folks are unhappy with DT due to rust showing up on headers that they thought would not rust. But I think the general concensus is that there is no reason to complain about the performance of the DT headers.

I would suggest going with the stillen LT's.
People arent happy with other Stillen products. I havent heard much griping about their headers. DT was or is having trouble with quality as of late. Also there was something going on with them making different shapes at the collectors or something wierd. I briefly read that in another thread. I would recommend the Stillen LTs
I can't really say anything about Doug Thorley's recent release of headers for the Titan, but I was one of the first in a group to get the a set of headers from doug thorleys first batch back almost 2 years ago. Can't remember the name of the guy I got them but he was a very reputable dealer on ebay IIRC. He owned a shop and distributor for Doug Thorley.

The stillen headers were my first choice though, but I couldn't pass up on the price for the Thorleys at the time I purchased mine.

Plus IIRC the titan firing order seems like it works pretty well in conjunction with a Tri-Y design header. just my .02
I need to buy the $500 OSIRIS setup, I have the UPREV Pro-Tune which is basically an ECU reflash/dyno tune. But I still got the different maps, 87, 93 performance etc....

I've been using the 93 performance tune ever since...
you dont need to pay 500 for that you need an etune-50, and a cipher cable.(buy it used i payed 100 for mine) contact uprev to let them know you already have it send them your rom and bam bam they send you an update for your uprev program (assuming you have already downloaded all of the free software/programs from UpRev - Engine Management) now im able to data log and flash a new tune to my ecu......i did the same thing you did at churches automotive 5 tunes on the dyno. cheers

Yep, i downloaded both Cipher and OSIRIS PDFs/software off their site...haven't had a chance to read thru both of them just yet.

But yeah I would like to get to do some logs with cipher (once I get the cable) and then get an Etune and compare between my Dyno protune and Etune.

The truck runs great as is, just gets 11.5mpg in my 93 tune. lol oh well.
