I think that since the DVD player is in there, it would make more sense for the passenger to be able to manage the process of changing the DVD while the driver does the driving. I can see the point about the center console. Opening backwards would eliminate the possibility of the rear seat folks from changing dvds etc.

Rear seat passengers cannot reach the latch to open the console from their seats. How are they going to change the DVD?
