Not sure if I am in the right forum category.

Want to start doing some of my own maintenance on my Titan. What size floor jack should I buy? Should I invest in stands also?

New to the whole mechanic thing. Sorry if question is stupid.

I use a 3500# floor jack, a small one easy to keep in my toolbox, combine that with a chunk of 4x4 or 6x6 wood about 2 feet long and it works great. Yes on jackstands, they are inexpensive and very useful. If you just want to access under the engine bay, look into the wheel ramps, which are also inexpensive and the 6" you get parking on them allows my fat *** to comfortably get underneath for oil changes, tranny drain and fill, wiring down the frame, etc. If I'm doing something that will require say, reefing on something with a breaker bar, I'll lack the truck up and put cribbing of wooden sills under the frame to make the truck REALLY solid.

yeah, it looks '*******' but IMO, you can't overdo bracing when you're under something like that working.

4000# jack with 4x4 block about 8" long to give me some extra lift, couple 2-2.5 ton stands. With my jack and block of wood I can jack it up on one side to rotate tires without having to lift one wheel, take it off, set on stands, move jack, etc etc.

Truck is leveled on 33's.

I have a bottle I keep in the truck in place of the POS stock jack for emergencies.

So I see some of you are using different size jacks. For example 2 ton and 3 ton. I guess what I was asking is what size can we get away with using and still be ok weight wise. I got some 3 ton jack stands.

I am new to the whole maintenance thing but figure it's never to late to learn. I guess they are rated by the weight your lifting?

Thanks again guys for all the info.

Rated by the max weight you can lift, yes. I wouldn't go any lower than 1.5 tons, 2 tons is a safe bet. Like Lee said, an easy way to get the front end up for oil changes is a set of ramps. I'm able to get under the truck without lifting it so I just use the jack when I need to take the wheels off.

I too have the 3 ton harbor freight jack. I also went ahead and picked this up:

Steel Floor Jack Cross Beam

Using this to lift from the crossmember makes it very easy, and secure. I'm on a 6 inch lift and still have no issues lifting it sufficiently.

Also, the 3 ton jack stands aren't high enough to keep my front end level with the tires off, so I had to opt for the taller 6 ton jack stands. No issues since. The 3 tons should be fine though for non-lifted applications.
