I use Teflon tape. I tried the RTV once and it worked equally well but was a lot more messy.

I didn't use anything, just tightened her back up.

If I was to use anything....it would be a commercial quality PTFE fluid since they are impervious to petroleum fluids and don't 'break away' into the mechanical parts after set up like RTV can. I only use Teflon tape when a plastic part is involved since the PTFE products usually have a solvent that can attack certain plastics.
