Front Hitch w/pic

I installed a Curt front hitch on my 08' Pro 4X today. Install was fairly straight forward and instructions were good, but it was not as simple as bolting it on (at least with this Pro 4X). Install took about 1.5 hours doing it alone, which includes some small modifications. It's a class III hitch with a standard 2" receiver. I know some use these for snow plows (not me). I will use it to spot my flatbed trailer (easier then backing it up), but ultimately I intend to buy myself one of these within the next few months:

Warn Industries - Ultimate Performance Series: 9.5ti Portable
I believe having the ability to use a winch on the front and rear of the T will allow me to get the most use of it.

Sooo the hitch. I got the hitch here:
2008 Nissan Titan Curt Class 3 FRONT 2" Receiver Hitches | Front Hitch | Curt Hitch
It was $161 with free shipping. It required drilling two 1/2" holes in the frame which was NBD. I also had to use a step drill bit to slightly enlarge two existing holes in the frame that are used to secure the rear of the hitch to the truck frame. Again this was only a slight modification that took 2 seconds to do (provided you have a good drill and a selection of step drill bits on hand).

I asked the question here whether or not these hitches could be added on and still utilize the factory skid plate that comes on the 4X, but nobody seemed to know the answer. The answer is no they cannot. The brackets that hold the front of the skid plate will no longer bolt up because the hitch does not allow for enough clearance. The skid plate wouldn't fit with the hitch either. I don't believe this will be a problem because where the hitch is located it will act a bit like a skid plate by preventing anything from scraping the bottom of the front fascia. I would say the hitch itself may reduce clearance on the front end by about 3" (eyeballing it). But the hitch is SOLID...especially when rammed on with an impact.

The other thing that had to be modified were the factory front tow hooks. I had to remove approximately 1/8" of material from the hooks with a grinder to clearance them so they could be remounted. This will do NOTHING to reduce their strength....they are still solid as a rock. The material I removed was left over from casting the hooks during production. I took the time to shoot some Krylon black paint on the hooks to prevent rusting on the spots I hit with a grinder.

Overall I am very pleased with the appearance and quality of the hitch. Now I can't wait to get the winch and wire it all up. For those trucks without a skid plate up front this would be a simple bolt on.

Nice! I want one!

Cool. I hope this can help people make a more educated decision about a front hitch. AND I couldn't wait on ordering the winch...it'll be here Wednesday! I ordered the Warn 9.5ti portable with wiring for front and rear of the T. Also picked up a winch accessory kit. More pics to come. :)
I built a front hitch for my 2010 by modifing one off of a Chev. Suburban. I have a welder and cutting equipment so it was not a big deal for me. I then cut my old skid plate and added some mounting tabs. The "new" skid plate mounts to the bottom of the receiver hitch assembly at the front and in the stock holes at the rear. I use a Warn 8000# winch mounted on the setup sold by Warn to pull from front or rear. It does, as previously noted, decrease front ground clearance some. I once pulled out too quickly onto a concrete road that had a high crown from a fairly steep approach angle and I can now verify the set up is very solid and will give you one hell-of-a-jolt whenever you encounter something solid with it!
I have to say, Curt's stuff is Top Notch and the powdercoating is phenomenal too... I had looked into that front hitch assy as an option to become "winchable" along with my future fabbed hybrid front tubular bumper... and I just noticed in your picture, the crossmember was "tow chain loops"? I would grind those off and weld on real beefy tow hoops and just remove the OEM tow hooks...

This is what I figured would happen. I don't think I will miss the skid plate, but now I know that hitch will let me know if clearance will be an issue.

I agree the tow loops look a little wimpy. I have a buddy with a welder so I may look into a set of D-rings as a replacement.
Just out of curiosity and not to be a d!ck but what are front hitches used for?

To tow stuff like big trailers and stuff...its pretty awesome.

J/K. I don't know what a front hitch is used for either.
You can use it to mount a portable winch or to back a trailer in to a location using the front of your truck.

Or you could do something like this :teethmast

The main purpose is to be able to plug a winch in the front or rear when needed... of course you need to run power to both ends too... You can buy a winch carrier assembly with handles for easy carry and install as well...

^^^ It's also great for stuff like that, and I recall a cool tailgate grill carrier that would be awesomely displayed on the front end at games... and meets too!!!
I've also seen them used to hold bike racks for when people are towing something attached the rear hitch.
The front hitch also helps with launching a boat. You can see where the boat is going easier and it keeps the rear tires on a dry(er) portion of the ramp.

Good one, had never thought to do that... ;)

Rolex; could you add some more pics? Curious to see how it looks head-on. Hoping to add one to my (soon to be) Titan

Never knew how many uses a front hitch had until I got one on my van:

....
Will do tomorrow.

My Warn 9.5ti portable winch w/wiring for front and rear of the T came in. I will make it my weekend project to get it all wired up and tested out. :bump:
BTT w/a few pics.
I would really like one of those, unfortunately they do not fit the 2010 (and 2009?) Titans. Hopefully they will make one that will fit soon.
