At highway speeds, I get an intermittent steering wheel shake. I jacked up the truck today and the driver's side front wheel has a fair amount of play in it. My first guess is the wheel bearing / hub is bad, but I don't have any noise that I can notice, which I would expect if I had a bearing going out. What else should I check before replacing the hub?

wheel bearings will have play in all directions. tie rods will have play left to right when you wiggle it

you won't always get a noise. Could also be a ball joint. In mine, when the struts were going (and then gone) I'd get a horrid SW shake, but only on bumps
