Fuel gauge recall, but mine not listed

Need a little help here. I have the usual issue of my gas gauge not going below 1/4 of a tank. I saw the recall for the 2005, but I called the dealer and was told that my 05 was not listed as part of it.

Could this be a mistake, or does it take some time for the recall notice to get to me?

I gave them the vin, but they said no recall for mine. I thought all 2005 models were recalled. I do have the IPDM recall, but not this one.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 10V074000

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:FUEL GAUGE SYSTEM
Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
Potential Number of Units Affected: 340000

Year: 2005
Make: Nissan
Model: Titan
Manufactured
from: 0000-00-00
to: 0000-00-00
Recall Date: 2010-03-03

Summary:

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2009 TITAN, ARMADA, AND INFINITI QX56 VEHICLES. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FUEL GAUGE MAY INACCURATELY DISPLAY THAT THE VEHICLE STILL HAS SOME FUEL, TYPICALLY ABOUT ONE QUARTER TANK, WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS EMPTY.

THIS COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO RUN OUT OF GAS AND STALL ON THE HIGHWAY, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH.

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL SENDER UNIT INSIDE THE FUEL TANK WITH A NEW IMPROVED SENDER CARD. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 22, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Mine never used to read full even after a fill up and would always get to empty long before the tank was actually empty. I noticed that if i park nose down on an slight incline in of my driveway, the tank would always read lower than it was, 7/8 of a tank when it is actually full, and if i parked nose up in my driveway it would read full when it was full. Now that i have it leveled, it is accurate.

I had problems wit hmyu titan for years with the gas guage, ran out of gas on the freeway once and after that i decided to get it fixed. I still dont trust it and have never had my idiot light come on. I dont even know if the light works. mabee ill take a 5gallon jug with me next time in around an 8th of a tank and drive till it comes on or dies haha

Thats what mine was like before i leveled it. Once leveled, it reads the fuel level properly

I called Nissan and got a claim started. They told me to take it to my dealer and have the service adviser call them after it was diagnosed. This will hopefully be easy. I have racked up 142k with no major issues and I really don't want to hassle with this if Nissan won't cover it.

Really glad I found this post!!! My 2004 T died on me on the road today. Fuel gauge said there was more than 1/4 tank left. I took a pic of it, thinking no one would believe me. NJDOT truck came by a gave me 2 gallons of gas. Truck fired right up. I'll be calling Nissan USA in the morning to get this ball rolling. Thanks guys!

I just got a ridiculous education on the difference between a Service Bulletin, and a Recall Campaign. I have a 2004 KC. In the Service Bulletin (attached above), my truck (including VIN) is included as being one of the units possibly affected by this known issue. A Recall Campaign, however, is a mandate from the Federal Government which states that Nissan must repair the affected units at no cost to the customer. This particular Recall Campaign has somehow been written (2005-2009 Titan) to exclude affected 2004 vehicles. How could this even be possible??? Its the same truck, the same Sending Unit, the same flaw, the same characteristic upon failure... But because the Federal Government has not stated that Nissan has to repair 2004 Titans (free of charge), Nissan is charging me (trying to, anyway) 381.00 for the repair of an issue that they are well aware of, and have repaired for free, for individuals who were fortunate enough to not have purchased the first model-year of this vehicle. If they think I'm taking this laying down (face down, *** in the air, with an open jar of Vaseline on the night stand), they got another thing coming (no pun intended).

My 2004 is having the same problem. I called Nissan and they told me to pound sand. Keep us posted.

Will do. I got them to reimburse me for the diagnostic charge, so far. They wanted me to pay for it, but I told them that running out of gas on the highway, when my fuel gauge showed more than a 1/4 tank WAS my diagnostic. They agreed to send me a check for the $99.50. The case has now been "escalated", and I'm waiting for a call back from them (which they promised would happen by end-of-day, tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes from here.

Wow, and I am surprised they reimbursed you for the diag fee. I hope they pay for the fuel sending unit.

They called me Friday and told me they needed to call the dealership to "get some information", and that they would be getting back to me by the end of the day on Monday. I guess they didn't realize it was a holiday. I'll wait until tomorrow to hear from them. I do have the documents I need, printed out. In Feb of 09, they acknowledged they had a problem with the 2004-2009 Titans (as well as Armadas). In March of 2010, they somehow "forgot" to include the 2004's on the list when they drafted their "Voluntary Recall Campaign", as it only stated 2005-2009 Titan and Armada. Previously acknowledging this as a Safety Issue, this represents gross negligence on Nissan North America's part. If I have to, I will get the folks at the NHTSA involved... All in all, I hope Nissan sees this as a heck of a nuisance to deal with, that can easily be avoided by simply fixing my truck, but stranger things have happened, so we'll see. I guess I'll know tomorrow.

Well, as promised, I'm back with my update... They called me today and told me that they decided not to "assist me" with getting my truck repaired. They gave me no explanation as to why "they" reached this decision. Only that they did. I asked if they were aware that they acknowledged the safety issue and conveniently ignored it when the recall came out... All I got was "I'm sorry, sir... blah blah blah". I told them that this represents Gross Negligence on the part of Nissan North America. (silence, then more "I'm sorry sir..."). Ok, time for round two... (Ding Ding)

I saw that coming. That is exactly what they told me. I still reported the incident to NHTSA to no avail. I hope you have better luck that I did.

Looks like they forgot to use the vaseline and you still took it. I'm in the same boat. It's not all 2005 models either. Mine is a 2005 LE and not covered. I just bought the sending unit today for $100 from the local dealership and plan on putting it on this weekend.

I had this problem in my truck. I had 1/4 of a tank and ran out of gas and burnt up the fuel sending unit. I had to pay for it out of pocket because their was no recall on my truck. I was p!ssed. The new one they put in has been pretty good I think the only problems I have now are caused by how my truck sits a little lower in the back then the front.

I always had a leveling kit on my truck since new so maybe that makes a difference. I never had any problems with the sending unit on mine. However, if there were only a few gallons left in the tank and I parked on an incline overnight or for a few days, the gauge would not read as accurate. It would show more fuel than I really had. The problem would get worse the less gas there was in the tank before I parked it. I have to admit, I usually run it around with about 1/4 or slightly less most of the time. I have gotten down to the bottom line and a few ticks under the E before it got critical.

If I went by the idiot light, I'd be constantly putting gas in it. When the light comes on, there's still a significant amount of fuel left in the tank. They need to reset the light to go on at a much lower fuel level. I wonder if there's a DIY way to do this? That way, I'd know how exactly how much fuel I had left when the light turns on.

On my old truck, I manually set the fuel sender (no idiot light) to read on the E line when I had exactly 1.5 gallons of fuel left. That way, I always knew approximately how much fuel I generally had in the tank before it reached a certain point on the gauge.
