Hey people. I have done alot of research on the titan, and i try different driving methods etc. and check gas mpgs, etc. I am a complete gearhead and love anything automotive. With that said i have found some things i think may be of use to some members. If all this information has been posted i apologize in advance.

1. Timing Chain componants on 04-06 Titans.
I have found out, from the the nissan dealer, that 04-06 titans have a problem with one of the gaskets/seals on the slack side tensioners. The "paper" gaskets blow prematurely, causing lack of oil pressure for the tensioner causing the spring to get weak, and results in them failing and causing a VERY VERY annoying tick. I currently have this issue at 80xxx miles. Tick has been there since 67k.

The fix the dealer is going to do is replace the "paper" gaskets with cork gaskets, and replace all timing chain componants.

2. Driving techniques
ok this will obviously vary from driver to driver. But i have the center console shifter where i can put it in any gear. i use to always drive in D (overdrive) at all times...i do not tow, ever, and if you do tow always drive in 4....while driving in D i would average 275-300 miles per tank. I drive easy, i never hammer on it. I have 34 inch tires, 4 inch after market exhaust and a cold air intake, and my computer has been tuned to cope for tire size etc so mphs are correct etc.

After watching some videos ive come to the conclusion that riding in town should be done in 4 not D. I just went through my first tank driving this way. it got to 347 miles before gas light came on. The difference in driving was that any speed under 50 mph i would drive in 4. aster than that id shift to D. ive noticed the truck does much better on hills and such....i live in country setting.....but for that much of an increase, i figured it would be worth the share.

Also my tranny temp gauge seems to stay a little bit cooler that usual, only like 10 to 15*....but cant complain with a cooler tranny. Doesnt work as hard to get up hills and get to speed in 4.

3. Alignments
People probably already know this, but those with bigger tires will need alignments more often. i had an alignment done 10k miles ago. As i said i have 34 inch tires(315/70/17) and stock for my truck calls for 285/70/17. Well the tires were toed out pretty bad. didnt feel like anything was wrong and always went straight. 10K miles is all it took to get thrown out of wack.....my tires cost $1400, so to do a $60 alignment to save them from wearing faster, since they were starting to cup, is worth it to me.

4. Oil Filters.
Dont buy aftermarket....but the $8 filter from the dealer. They have a drain back valve for the oil, which for these trucks with hydrolic timing tensioners and such, it is a much needed filter with this valve. Most fram and purolator dont have this anti drainback valve, which can cause premature failure to some componants....i know this, ive blown a titan motor....

Theres more things im reading up on that i will post as well. Hope this can help some people

Youre right abkut driving in town in 4 especially with 35's i can feel the TC switching in n out of overdrive so i leave it in 4 till i do hwy..Hmm I'm due for an oil change and I use the mobile 1 filter that a lot of people on here swear by. I will try the Nissan oem filter. Just hopefully it's 8$ at my local dealers here in socal too. . What about any info on why the oil cooler rings fail on these trucks. I need to do mine and I'm just gunna order mine on amazon. They're 4.99 for a pack of three. And swap it on my upcoming oil change.

Oil cooler ring is a breeze....i was able to change mine without the skid plate removed, but would be much easier with it off. This oil cooler gasket for 04-06 i believe cant be bought anymore, and the one for 07+ the dealer claims is different and they try to get you to buy a whole new oil cooler housing...dont.....if you plan on changing it, get 2 nissan oil filters for the titan.

To change it, take the GASKET on the 2nd oil filter off....this is the same size gasket needed to change oil cooler gasket. With the oil filter off, and preferably the skid plate removed, take a 7/8 DEEP socket and unscrew the "nut" thats on the same spline as where the oil filter screws onto...hard to miss....take it all the way out, and the cooler will now be free. be careful as the small lines connected to it are filled with coolant. theres no need to remove those. just flip the cooler housing upside down and you will see the gasket. just pull it out, clean up the area and put the gasket from the 2nd oil filter in the "slot"....theres a groove where the gasket sets in. just line it back up and put the 7/8 nut with thread back in...DO NOT tighten the crap out of it, when it gets snug, just do a nice 1/4 turn....it will strip easily. and BE CAREFUL not to damage the threads where the oil filter screws on when you take it out....

Very very simple job....with skid plate on it took me 5 minutes

Even if its not leaking and your looking to do an oil change, change it....it will eventually go. dont know why...they just do this is my 2nd 2005 titan and both did it, my first one i bought with 130K and it had to be changed when i bought, my new one had 70K when i changed it and it was leaking

and just FYI i run Mobil 1 Full syn 5w30 with nissan filter...always have great oil pressure. and i change every 4K

The filter thing is a myth, especially since your oil filter points down. It's not going to drain.
The timing chain tensioner also has a kind of ratcheting lock on it. It will only collapse a very small amount when your engine is shut off. As the chain wears, it ratchets farther out like a drum brake adjuster.

The tensioner lock on my Z doesn't seem to be doing its job. It's not a big deal though, just a minor split second rattle on cold startup...I wish there was a filter that could help it.

I'll also add that there is no way to have your computer adjusted to compensate for different size tires and align the speedo/tach to the new tires. There's a mechanical adjustment offset gear thing, but the computer won't do it.

Hypertec makes something, not sure exactly what but it adjusts for tire sizes.

So then what buy a Nissan oem filter or not? That's what I meant by almost every one runs Mobil filters.

Hey Zeus can I buy two Mobil 1 filters and do what you said instead of the Nissan ones? Or should I just do what you recommended? Thanks

An filter will work just fine. I usually get a mid level Fram for 6 bucks.

In most cases car manufacturers branded filters and fluids are just mass market products in special packaging with the dealer markup. I tried to look for who makes Nissans filters but generally people think it is a rebranded Japanese maker, so it is hard to identify here for the US.

Gas,5k oil change, drive. Been doing it since 12/07. It's just a vehicle & it doesn't need to be over analyzed.

So am I wasting my money on K&N oil filters? I haven't put one in my Titan yet, but I've been using them on my Xterra for years...

Well the only thing I'm over analyzing is what oil filters to use. One for replacement and one for the O ring on the oil cooler. Or should I just order the actual part off amazon?on my chevy I use to do every 3 k penzoil platinum full synthetic with k&n filter and got good mpg and the truck just felt a little better then I switched to a cheaper stp oil filter and the change oil would come on without me having to remember that I hit 3k. With my titan when I switched oils with the same platinum synthetic and Mobil 1 filter the mileage was OK but I've never gone past 3k on any car and I'm at about 4500k on this filter and oil and I think my mileage is getting a little worse. So i think it could play a part in how efficient your engine runs.

There are filters that are better than others. I don't know much about K&N brand specifically.

In general, for the average driver, filters and oil get changed more often than needed. The only way to really know though is to get your oil tested. I only put about 5k a year on my truck so I change the oil at 5k or 1 year whatever comes first. I could probably go longer but oil changes are cheap preventative maintenance so I choose not to push it longer. I did get my oil tested a few times at 5k and I could have gone longer, but at 1 time per year I just went ahead and did it.

I run Mobile 1 oil and Fram filters.

I was just pointing out before that the filters and fluid you get from the dealership that are branded as Nissan, Ford, Chevy, and whatever other vehicle makes do this are usually rebranded products.

On my old Expedition, I swore by K&N filters, but that was because the 1" wrench lug on the end as much as anything because it was nearly impossible to get anything else on the filter to change it based on where it was located. With the way that was setup that 1" lug was worth it's weight in gold.

On the Titan, I just used a Mobil 1 filter.

best oil filter we have found for the racing conditions we put the VK through is a WIX filter made for NAPA. 47356 platinum. Fiber mesh reinforced filter with the valve. We have used them for 4 years now pulling over 7000 rpm's over and over . We have tested out many and these were by far the best! So for a daily driver they are more than good.
