I just had my Rear end rebuilt by the dealer a couple of months ago. My truck was parked for a couple of days and had about 2ft of snow around it, so I thought it might be a good time to try the Diff lock. After starting I flicked the switch and heard a grinding/ whirring sound coming from somewhere. ( maybe the dif?) So I turned it off. I then tried the 4wd. I put it in 4wd and had a couple of tries to get out and did so, however it struct me as funny that it did take some effort. It seems that the 4wd is not working either and that I got out just in 2wd. (go the TITAN!) I now switch from 2wd to 4wd and get the same grinding/whirring sound as the difflock. Have anyone got any thoughts on this.
The Dealer is 370miles away so its a mission to take it back, but I will be emailing them tonight.
Thanks for and help
Cheers

The Elocker won't even try to engage until the truck is in 4L, even then you usually need to be moving a little bit for the locker to catch. Somethings not adding up...

Thanks for that I'll try that today... Maybe its the operator!.. So might be a different problem all together with the 4wd

Ok So I took the truck out on the road which is icy. It goes into 4lo no problem then put the diffloc on. The "difflock"on the dash flashed 4 times then when out. I took off slowly and the rear wheels slipped, the front axle didn't seem to do a thing. I stopped and released everything back to 2wd then put it into 4wd. No difference with wheel slip. I can hear a solenoid click when I switch into 4wd and the dash Icon shows it in 4wd... but definitely not in 4wd.
Anyone got any Ideas, Is there some fuse to check? Transfer case sensor?

So even in 4WD you still have 2 open diffs. This means that if one wheel starts slipping it will get 100% power compared to the wheel on the other side of the axle. Still very easy to get stuck on ice with 4WD engaged. With the e-locker you have to be in 4WD and either stopped or moving below 4mph. Like AZ said, usually you need to move it forward or backward a bit to get it to engage.

With all that being said, grinding noise is bad.

Thanks for the reply, Im not getting the grinding noise now, so I think that it was driver error:smile: I guess Im use to AWD Subarus are the BEST!!
SO what about the diff lock light flashing and not staying on?? and in 4lo and difflock on still get wheel spin?

When you shifted to 4Lo, were you in Neutral and sitting still? Because Titans will shift from 2Hi to 4Hi in any gear, at low to moderate speeds (check the manual on speeds, though - I just know it will engage 4Hi at 15-20mph as I've done it). But it won't shift into 4Lo (or out) except in Neutral, sitting still (and even then may take a little motion to fully engage, but you have to be still in Neutral to initiate). If it's not in Lo, the diff lock won't engage, and I'm thinking maybe it flashes then goes out in that circumstance.

Like dubyam said, you may not have been in 4Lo. I meant to say you have to be in 4Lo (not 4WD) to turn the e-locker on. With the e-locker it locks the rear diff, but the front will still stay open. Can't use 4Lo above 10mph either, if I remember right. 4Hi is anything below 55 I think, but I've used it faster than that on straight line runs.

Wheel spin is directly related to the surface you're on. Locking the rear diff won't magically make your wheels stop spinning (especially with an empty bed).

Yes I was sitting still. Ah, ok, so when you put the diff lock in it flashes then goes out..ok, I thought it would stay on to remind you that you have it on...Is this correct?

It should stay on and you should also see the VDC light and possibly the SLIP light as well (haven't locked the diff in a while). If it flashes or flashes and goes out it's not locked.

Not exactly. First, sitting still isn't enough. If your transmission is not in Neutral, your Titan will not shift into 4Lo. Sitting still in any other gear setting won't work. You have to be in Neutral.

Second, what I said is if you're not in 4Lo, the diff lock light will flash and then go out. If you manage to get shifted into 4Lo, it will come on and stay on.

As LAX said above, if your rear wheels spin but not your fronts, you're not in 4wd. There is no differential in the transfer case. The axles receive equal power distribution at all times.
