Hard to steer... Sometimes?

I searched thru the posts and couldn't find anything, so here it goes...

When I go to turn into a parking spot kind of fast with the brakes on the steering wheel gets really hard to turn. It almost feels like the power steering pump is dragging. The wierd thing is it only does it when turning the wheel pretty fast with the brakes on. This happened the other day and I thought I was going to sideswipe a car! I'm pretty sure it's not the power steering pump, because there is no noise or leaks and the level is fine. The truck is a 4x4 w/ BT and no VDC. If anyone else has any ideas about what this might be I would appreciate it. I'm going to have the dealer check it out, but I'll probably get the infamous "could not duplicate". Thanks in advance,

Mark

might be normal-you can out turn the PS

It might be normal-you can out turn the power steering if you are really trying to turn the steering wheel quickly.I don't know that it has anything to do with the brakes being on;it might be that you only try to spin the steering wheel that hard when you are going slowly-brakes on turning into a parking spot.I do remember that one of the moto mags commented on the Titan's power steering being kinda slow.I can duplicate what you noticed when I go around the circle at the end of my street.Luck,Charlie

I had a '97 GMC Sierra that did just what you describe. It had various sensors that allowed the p/s to work with full assist at low speed, and like rack and pinoin at highway speeds. The trouble is they would get 'confused', and like you have experienecd, go to turn a corner and all of a sudden you need both hands to get the wheel turned. I think they replaced some sensor in the steering column and it fixed it.

The power steering pump started to leak at some point and I replaced it, I noticed that there is a solenoid controlled valve on one of the lines from the p/s pump, that must be how it controls the assist.

Luckily, no problems like that with my '04.

I figured I would hear this at the the dealer too, even if it wasn't. I guess before I take it in Ill try to see if I can duplicate it with the brakes off. I'll probably try it in a parking lot because I'm afraid I might hit something if trying this on the road because you really have to tug on the wheel. If someone wasn't expecting it this could be a bad thing.

Thanks again,

Also when Consumer Reports tested the Titan back in June '04 they made the comment: "...quick back-and-forth turning of the steering wheel caused the steering pump to momentarily lose its power assist."

Now if we only knew the solution to this problem which I have also experienced. Come on Nissan, how about addressing this problem.
