made their own CIA? I'm thinking about taking the box off, relocating the windshield washer fluid canister to where the air box currently is located. Then taking off the black plastic trim that sits right behind the grill and just adding a nice smooth flowing tube from where the air box attached to the air inlet towards the MAF to just behind the grill and adding a cone filter.

Anyone try this at all?

Not that I'm aware of. I say "GO FOR IT!"
It has been done before, but why butcher the stock box, lose or relocate the washer bottle, when you can buy a new CAI for $250 and have a nice sealed system. If you start moving a cone filter way up front with an open grille, rain and water will become a a potential engine damaging experience.

-Stock box would be removed. No butchering involved.
-Relocating the washer bottle wouldn't be to hard since I've got plenty of scrap aluminum laying around.
-A air filter behind the grill isn't going to damage an engine with water. I live in the desert and do not offroad. If a bunch of STS (rearmount turbo'd) Fbodies have no issues picking up water in FL with thier filter 5" off the ground near the rear tire, then I really doubt a filter 3-4 feet off the ground away from the tires will have any issues.

I am going to try it and see how things work out. Filter will cost no more then 50.00 and the AL is free. I like engineering something new/modding our cars/trucks. Also 50 <<<< 250 ;)
good luck with the mod, make sure you take some pics and post here.

You know you can also just do the airbox mod and drop in a k&n filter and get good results.
keep us updated. I have acces to AL as well, and this seems like a decent idea....
Thanks guys.

It will be in a week or 2. My wife and i have to go to Vegas(where her family lives) because her Grandmother died around 330am Sunday. :(

I will take pics and post them up when I am done. Just FYI, there will be no before/after dyno.....other then the seat of the pants.
the custom ram air filter is a good idea, a functional hood scoop would be better but beggers cant be choosers

also i wouldnt worry about getting water into the filter, the only time when water entering the engine is a bad thing is when the intake is completely submerged and you hydrolock your engine
