Hey guys getting ready to drop the hammer on the ring and pinion and truetrac rear diff package from 4x4 parts. Question is I am buying a 21 foot toyhauler soon and not quite sure which gears to order, 3.73 or 4.11?

Tire size ?
Damn see what happens when you marinate all day on the couch sipping on some beers lol. I will tow maybe 2 or 3 times a month otherwise everything else is putting around town and don't wanna kill mileage too much. Truck has 35's and 2wd.:hi:

If you had OEM 32" tires with BigTow 3.36 gears a 3.73 rear with 35" tires would bring you back to the stock feel.

Say you have the OEM big tow gears of 3.36 and approx 33" OEM tires. To get back to the effective factory ratio with 35" tires, you need to do the ratio:

35/33 = New Ratio / 3.36

New Ratio = 35/33(3.36) = 3.56

New Tire Size / OEM Tire Size = New Ratio / OEM Ratio

So the formula to get you running at the same RPM at the same speed as with OEM axle ratio and tire size is:

New Ratio = New Tire Size / OEM Tire Size x OEM Ratio

Say you have the non big tow OEM ratio of 2.94

New Ratio = 35/33(2.94) = 3.12

So off the cuff, I would be inclined to go with 3.73 gears for 35" tires if the primary motivation was preserving MPG.

This assumes that the OEM big tow ratio is satisfactory for towing a 21 foot toy hauler on 33" tires. (which I have never done, so I dunno)

Looking at it another way for 3.36 big tow ratio and 33" oem tires:

New Tire Size / OEM Tire Size = New Ratio / OEM Ratio

New Tire Size = New Ratio/OEM Ratio (OEM Tire Size) = 4.11/3.36(33) = 40.37" tires to get you back to the factory effective final drive ratio for the OEM big tow gears.

I would run 3.54s with 35s and 3.73/4.10s with 37/38" tires. I'm running 38s with 3.73s and it put me back to stock except it is 83 rpms lower at 80 mph then it would have been with 3.36 and 33s at 80 mph. I'd like to switch to 4.10s though.

Your math is flawed....with 35" tires, 3.73 puts you almost dead on with the stock 3.357 tow gears AND 32" tires...

to the OP:4.10 gears will really make the Titan happy while towing....I had my 3.73 gears with 33" tires which is pretty much the same overall ratio and the truck liked it...

Thanks guys for all your input, I think I am gonna lean towards the 4.10 gears. Lou I live up in the Antelope Valley and only plan on towing to either California city or Dumont to do most of my riding. I do care about the gas mileage as I do drive to my fathers house in Arizona but really I bought my truck brand new in 07 and I just clocked 21k miles on her so its definately not a daily driver. I think she might be happier with the 4.10's with a toy hauler on the back as those things get weighted down pretty fast and carry a ton of tongue weight. I know even right now with a s&b intake, flowtech muffler di/so, and the superchips programmer it still tows pretty good but I am just missing that bottom end pull.

not my math.. this websites.. gear ratio calculator

It states the following..

Gear ratio- 3.36
MPH- 80
Tire diameter-33
O/D ratio- 0.834
RPM at MPH- 2283

Gear ratio- 3.73
MPH- 80
Tire diameter- 38
O/D ratio-0.834
RPM at MPH 2200

Gear ratio- 4.10
MPH- 80
Tire Diameter- 38
O/D ratio 0.834
RPM MPH- 2419

So according to this online calculator I would say running 3.73s put me back to stock... And im still pulling 17 mpg freeway..
