This is the least expensive supplier should you wish to experiment with HIDs. About $80 total.
I got 9005 (highs) 4300K since I use them only when there are no oncomimg cars, on open country roads. Beware, there is the the usual warm-up time (about 5 to 10 seconds) for full output. After reading all I could find about conversions, running 9006 (lows) did not seem the way to go for me.
The box came within 3 - 4 days direct from Japan. (As if the claims of "US made", and "...US factory", I have seen in some ads are true.)
Works quite well. I did not open the balast case, but I believe from the sound it makes when tapping on the top and bottom covers, that they are potted (encapsulated) units. Bulbs are potted with some sort of epoxy like material within the bases; not as the Philips brand would be with compression clips securing bulb and base. No relay for a direct battery feed on this kit. There is the standard soft O-ring that acts as a seal against the headlamp housing, but even with that the bulb is not quite as snug in the housing as I would expect. Seems OK though so far.
My initial thought was to hold one of the 9005 HID bulbs in the low beam socket to visually gauge the beam pattern and light scatter it creates on a white wall. But realizing these run at 23K volts AC @ 400Hz, I thought better.
Light output is great. At first I thought they were not working. But after the initial ignition flash, they begin to warm and show their stuff. New reflective, yellow street signs illuminated by these HIDs on a pitch black night actually appeared too bright to me, forcing me to look away momentarilly. When an oncoming car is seen and it's time to shut off the HID highs, it's nightime again. Big difference. Great for dark country roads. Worth the $80.
