Hooper's - Fact and Myth...Gears!

12766 Views 45 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  loufish
I had Columbus Day off today...It's nice to work for the City! Took a trip out to Hoopers Rear end service in Sun Valley and spoke to Anthony...Here's the poop:

They have in fact installed different gears in several Titans...They were a set of Dana's Super 44 R&P, and they've only done the 3:73's.
Althought Anthony couldn't remember every exact detail, what he said was to do the install the actual ring carrier has to be machined down, and then a spacer has to be machined for another part of the carrier or pinion. He's not sure if it would work with a set of 4:10's...

He said it's a mess in there(the diff) Nissan has had Dana make all sorts of changes to the basic Super 44.

He said no problem throwing in a TruTrac if retaining the stock gears...

No, I didn't ask what the cost would be for the speacial gear change, but he quoted about 150-175 for the TruTrac install....Very do-able

Thanks for the info,Hoopers is a great company to do business with!
Scottyg267 I believe has his truck in this week for some gears. Here's the post he made on the price.I want to know if they have gears for the front. I only have 35's but would love to have 3.73's. I feel the gears with BT are too tall. When towing my trailer I have to tow at 60 or faster or else my tranny will start slipping.

That's the torque converter not locking up...

The front end is ANOTHER can of Dana worms...

That's what I mean to say. So you think the front diff. will be even harder to regeared?

It started out as sometihng and after Nissan re-spec'ed it its now something else....Just like the rear...

That isn't the torque converter it is one of the clutch packs in the trans not fully locking up yet at that RPM..

In-correct, the clutch paks aren't programed to slip at all, there-fore there is no rpm that has to be met to fully lock them up.

:boxing: j/k
So the with the conversion of the rear, are we able to run lockers and stuff from super Dana 44? Or just the gears?

No, Anthony said the carrier bearings were NOT Super 44, but rather like a GM 12 bolt size...Since the carrier has to be machined I'd say it's just gears for now.
All they've done is 3:73's, he said he's not sure if they could do 4:10's...
3.90 is the lowest you can go.
3.90 is the lowest you can go.
Do you mean that's the lowest gear set for a a Super 44?
Well, i can say one thing about hoopers... man they LAGGG!!!! I drove scottyG all the way down there cause they told us they would be done by 2 or 3pm. We immidiatly head down there, and they say not done. They said, well maby by 6, so we say we will wait (its located in the ghetto). Then he says come back tomarrow afternoon. I dont think theywere even working on it but they coulda saved us a lot of time and gas.
Oh well, hpfully tommarrow it will be up and running with the new 3:73 gears and trutrak.

Usually they're pretty good about getting work done when they say so, but this is a truely custom job not just a swap-out of stock parts...
It's alway frustrating not getting your toy back when you expected it...even more so if you have to drive across the valley...

Ya we were just frusterated i guess. They claim to have done a dozon Titans but im not buying it, cause they are learning what to do as they go. As long as it is done right though. They had to take material off one side of the trutrac flange and add some to the other side. Going back around noon
<<FACT>>
Dropped ScottyG off today to pick up the truck. Scott may be able to tell you prices later and more detail. Hoopers did it and scott says drives awsome! Finaly some low end back after those 37" monsters. 3:37's which should be equivlent to 4:56!

Not sure if Scott has posted about this yet. They finished last minute and he was going outta town for the weekend.
I will say that i dont think it was very expensive at all, especially if you dont have the trutrak. The trutrack material was so strong they could barely machine it! The kept ruining bits etc.
