If you do or don't have the "tow package"

What is the towing limit for the non tow-package titan?

The Big Tow would mean your truck came with a hitch receiver..... :D

Seriously, the Big Tow comes with the 3:10 gears (not that you'd notice by looking at the truck), a "Tow Mode" button on the center console under the heater controls, and the most obvious feature, the Big Tow extendable mirrors.

And I don't know that I've seen a published figure for "towing capacity" of a non-Big Tow Titan.....
ok thats why I'm confused...I DON'T have the Tow Mirrors or the OEM Reciever but I do have a Tow Button...
Now THAT'S odd..... the towmode changes the transmission shift points while towing. When you push the button, does the truck shift sooner? Later? Does it affect the shifting at all?

Oh, also, the tranny has an additional fluid cooler with the tow package.
haven't played with it that much, I just thought it was odd I had the tow mode button but a 6,000 pound aftermarket hitch and normal mirrors....
The non-BT trucks also have the Tow Mode button.

Only difference is mirrors, gears, trans. cooler, temp. gauge, and the hitch.
so what is the towing capacity for the non-tow titan?
It's in your owner's manual somewhere. I don't know it off hand because I've never towed anything.

Actually the gears for the BT package or what they now call "Tow Package" is the lower final gear ratio 3.357, similar to a 4-speed automatic 4.10 ratio.

The Towing rate for the Tow package is 9400 lbs and for the non-tow package it's 7100 lbs.

Now doesn't the class IV receiver hitch with the 7-pin wiring harness plug only come with the tow package?...I don't know, but if it does that's one way to tell
Re: How Can You Tell

Big Tow adds mirrors, higher final gear, hitch, trans temp gauge and higher weight capacity tires (that's what gets the higher capacity over athe OR)

OR adds higher gears and has the tow button (add higher cap tires; bingo, higher tow capacity)

Standard, (I will assume) none of the above

All Titans have the same frame, springs (12 MM wheel arch height difference, will assume due to smaller tires on standard) (4X4 models) and cooling (H2O, engine oil and trans fluid) per factory service manual... No comments on the shocks, they all suck.

Hey..That's MY line! :hi:

All the Titans have the same external trans cooler and same engine cooling package...
The quickest way to tell if you have a Titan with the factory tow package is the Trans temp gauge, everything else can be bolted on...
ok, so the biggest difference are the GEARS and the TEMP Gauge. The previous owner added the 7pin plug. Are the gears different in the TRANS or in the AXLES? I can't imagine I would tow anything over 7100 pounds anytime soon but you never know.

The transmission is the same. The axle gears are different.
I have an 04 xe with the tow mode button and it came factory with the receiver hitch and 7 pin harness but I don't have tow mirrors and I have an idiot light for the a/t trans temp. So what do I have then? My truck is also a 4x4.

Chances are that the dealer added the hitch and harness.

You have an 04 XE without the BT package.

The OR package does not add the tow mode button as all Titans come with the tow mode button as standard equipment.
I noticed on my truck that it has the aluminum differential cover with the fins for keeping it cooler. Is that factory or did previous owner put that on? I was also wondering about how I could find out if anything has been done to it for the recalls. Can I take it to a dealer and find this stuff out? It makes me wonder because mine has 84000 miles and I have no problems with it at all. I have read alot about brake problems and other things so I was just wondering. Thanks for any help!

All 2005 + Titans have the finned aluminum cover. If yours is an 04 with the finned cover, chances are the entire rear diff assembly was replaced. There is a small chance that the previous owner simply upgraded to the newer style cover.

If you take it to the dealer, they can tell you all work that was performed on that vehicle by any other Nissan garage.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. I'll have to stop by a dealer and check it out. I'd definitely like to know more about my truck.
