Been searching for a while now and I am probably going to start a slow long system build in stages starting with a head unit next month. I just bought an 08 crew cab (love this machine) with the non fosgate system in it. I pulled the head unit already just for a minute to check the plug style behind it before ordering an adapter. Radio says 2007 on it. Truck vin is 2008 but so far its been a crap shoot ordering the harness and bezel for it because its undoubtedly a late 2007 model sold as an 08 .... I believe
Any ways here is my delima, going with a pioneer 3800 dvd head unit - haven't bought it yet but almost set in stone - I like pioneer and I like the features. I keep planning out the rest of the system and run into snags. I definitely want an upgrade in sound quality across the board - only going to do one 8" woofer just because I'm not huge on bass and want to keep the space.
Here is my thought process and basically a long what would you?
I could run the obvious answer to me - 5 ch amp with good components and the sub. Problem is I already wired in a electric big rig style horn the pulls some juice - running two compressors and 20 amps to both of them - don't want to overtax the stock charging system - I know the horn is only momentary but if I run a larger amp even if the charging system can handle it I don't think I could get away with the other "cool guy" mods in the future like light bars and what not
Thought about running a 4 ch amp and only powering the front speakers and bridging the sub. Just using the rear doors for fill. Draw a little less juice but the major issue to me is most 4 channels that I see don't include a remote bass knob - must have.
Then thought about a decent sub and good mono amp and either doing components or coax straight off the head unit - obviously not as good but maybe enough.
I have done some sort of install on about every vehicle I have owned so far since highschool in 2001. Mostly head unit and big subs. This time I am looking for something a little different. Maybe I'm getting old. Any help/advise/thoughts/put downs and so on are much appreciated. BTW this stock system sounds like trash.
