Hey guys! I've got a 2007 Armada, FFV with the dreaded cracked manifold. I'll be having JBA long tubes installed later this week. Unfortunately, I can only afford the header install right now, so it will be a little while before I install Cajun pipes and Uprev. My question is: what are my options for checking AFR after my header install? Does it have to be checked on a dyno? Or can I simply check fuel curves on a scanner or handheld tuner? I can hear a rattle in bank 2 manifold cat, so that's the only reason I'm not waiting until I can afford Cajun pipes and Uprev before my header install. And thanks to the search button, I've read that FFV vehicles can get away without a tune for a little while....
Thanks!

You should check with Jeff at Cajun B-Pipes on the need to tune. I too was under the impression that FFV could get by without a tune. But I think I saw a recent post from Jeff that indicated that the general consensus was wrong and they should be tuned.

If you have a friend with Uprev they can check your AFR. They just can't apply a tune to your Armada.

Your choices for checking the AFR are basically pay $$ and get on a dyno at a local performance shop, or find someone local who has Uprev and use their cable to datalog.

The flex fuel trucks do tend to run rich with the headers so you're not in any immediate danger of harming your engine, BUT if you're installing catted B pipes it will cause them to fail prematurely.

For what it's worth I recently installed jba long tube headers on my non-ffv Titan. I am running it with a Bully Dog GT and stock catted B pipes. I have been monitoring AFV with the Bully Dog for 2 days now and have yet to see it go higher than 12-12.5 at low to part throttle. At WOT it drops as low as 11.5-11. Only on decell does it go lean to 18 which is what I would expect. My coolant has been running normal still at 200 on hot 90drg humid days here in PA. Only problem I have is recent CEL codes for the b pipe O2 sensor heaters and two Evap codes. Truck is running great and sounds even better! I installed new plugs also and will pull those soon to check for lean condition indication. I still plan on upgrading soon to Uprev with resonated b pipes, but for now I feel safe with this setup.

Strange thing is that is what it was running with the stock cracked headers too. No intake mods other than drop in kn filter. Though I've been told bully dog afv values are not accurate? Plan to check that with the Uprev when it arrives later this week.

Also this is what oem iridium plugs look like after 214k miles compared to a new plug! What happened to the electrode? I bought he truck this way. Can't believe it was still running like this.

Thanks to everyone that's responded! This forum is great! Yeah, I just replaced my Spark plugs. It always smells like I'm running rich, but my plugs didn't look bad, so I attributed the smell to my cracked manifold. The shop that's doing my header install has a dyno, should I drive a few hundred miles to let my truck adjust before checking AFR? And does everybody re-torque their JBA long tubes after 100 miles?

Getting on the dyno isn't free. If you're getting Uprev anyways later on you might as well just scratch together some more money and get it now. That money you will spend on the dyno pulls is gone forever...

Yes re-torque your bolts after driving for a bit. I had a couple that had loosened.

I did the same thing before uprev and the BDGT AFR readings are not accurate at all. It was a full point off from the tailpipe sniffer on the dyno. Most flex trucks will go rich which is not good for carbon build up on the rings and pistons. The truck being out of tune will also kill cats like the cracked manifolds do. Really no way around Uprev if you want a properly running Titan.

Hey Nightowl! I believe it was you that I spoke to on the phone a couple weeks ago. Thanks again for everybody's help. I just need to get by for a little while until I can afford the Uprev. I know there's no way around it; and I do plan on getting it. I honestly am just short of that much scratch right now, especially with the price of the header install. I plan on getting Uprev ASAP.... oh, does any one know where I can find those walker extended o2 sensors?

I'll offer one other relatively cheap option. You can buy an ELM-327 Bluetooth dongle ($12-15 on Amazon) and use Torque ($4.99 on Android) to read the AFRs for your truck. Mine is pretty reliable across multiple vejicles, although it isn't 100% compatible with Fords for some reason. That's a known issue. I've figured out how to make it work, though. For my Titan, the only downside is it doesn't read the Trans Temp at all, and I have screwed up some setting and now can't read the actual O2 sensor voltage values. I can still read the AFR calculated values, however.
