so after a LONG time of going back and forth with s&b and several different tubes sent to me i thought we finally had it right and it wasnt going to run lean anymore so i towed my boat 800 miles to lake havasu and 240 miles into the trip it through the code for running lean and started overheating climbing the grapevine. valves were clacking louder then the stereo and everything, i limped it to my parents house and everywhere was closed for the weekend but orally was able to get me a k&n 77 kit. the truck runs great by itself it doesnt run lean or anything but once i put my 5k pound boat on it its a dog and starts eating through fuel at 9.5-10mpg , but once i put the stock airbox back on it runs great and i get 14mpg on the highway. what gives? just two bad intakes?

There is nothing wrong with the intakes. Its just the fact that your truck is sensitive to performance parts. You need to find out what your Air fuel ratio (AFR) is stock and with whatever brand intake your running. Most all trucks on here run different. Changing air delivery may cause some to go leaner and some richer. You need something to check yours, either from a shop with a sniffer or uprev, bullydog gt etc etc. Its a very bad idea, just to slap aftermarket parts on and hope for the best.

Lol... I get 16-18 mpg with a S&B and 13-14 with a MXP. No tuning changes just swapping intakes. The afrs seem to be the same with either intake. The gms is about 33 more than the S&B at wot if I remember right 233 S&B and 266 mxp.

i have a bullydog gt i tried towing with it on the mild tune i think its the performance tune and i was having the problem with it going lean so i retuned it all back to stock and still was having issues so i put the stock box back on and it was all good.. i tried resetting the computer to learn the intake like s&b told me to but nothings worked.. my old 06 i slapped an ebay intake on and it had no problems at all but this truck is sensitive to EVERYTHING i do... this truck struggles to pull my boat but my old truck would haul 8k-9k pounds like it wasnt back there. i dont know whats up with this truck... hard part is I'm not good with computers and tuning and all that good stuff lol.

I have the Volant PowerCore intake and I'm Uprev tuned. It's been that way for over three years. I had an slight overheating problem a few days ago pulling my ATV over a 9,000' pass. Now I'm beginning to wonder if my tune needs to be updated. I never redid my tune after I installed the Berk b-pipes.

I had not considered switching Uprev back to the stock map or to the tow map. Maybe I should have.

Anyhow, what got me started reading this thread is that my Volant PowerCore was horribly noisy on this trip. I'm considering some other intake that doesn't howl and vibrate.

yeah i've always heard you shouldn't tow with your truck tuned because its bad for it. i know my old ford the trans wouldn't hold with anything over a tow tune when hauling my boat. i've heard good things about the aem, i may order one or just do a k&n drop in since i already did the air box mod when i first bought the truck

Got the right gears?
thats a damn good question. are they labeled on the diff covers on these trucks? im gonna have to go out there and crawl under it right now, this does have the big tow and my last titan didn't.
