If you’re thinking of ordering a BackFlip Tonneau cover for your truck you might want to think again. I ordered one for my Titan just over four years ago and have been dealing with leaky cracks and the surface is faded.

It’s funny because there web site says that their Tonneau cover “Are Made from materials that are virtually indestructible and will not will never dent through normal daily use” and “The BakFlip will remain looking as good on the truck in 5 years as it does from the day you put it on your truck”

I looked at many Tonneau cover before I decided BackFlip was the one for me. I even wrote to the company asking about fading and heat resistant because I live in Georgia, the response I got was the same as noted on their website “The BakFlip will remain looking as good on the truck in 5 years as it does from the day you put it on your truck” and will not be affected by the heat of the sun.

What not funny is the fact that not only did the Tonneau cover crack it also faded, when I wrote the company to inform them of my situation I got the following response:

“You could try using a clear silicone to fill the cracks too however I don't know how long that will be good for” they also said they would be happy to upgrade your cover to our aluminum for a discounted rate but they could not replace it because it was out of warranty.

The problem is I don’t have the money to spent on a new Tonneau cover when I spent well over $700.00 on this one. I asked if they could supply/ sell me the top surface to replace the damage one and they told me “You'd have no way to adhere them to your current seals and panels and they wouldn't not be deemed safe it you were to just glue a panel on to your existing one”.

If you are asking why not just use clear silicone to fill the cracks like suggested, I thought about it for a moment or two I even called a manufacture of clear silicone to inquire if it would work. The manufacture told me that they do have a product that would work but would not look good at all, it would make the cracks stand out even more.

The realy sad thing about all this is I really did like the BackFlip for the first two years after I but it on my truck after that it went downhill, I guess I now know why they have a 2 year warranty.

In conclusion you may want to think a little harder before you buy a BackFlip Tonneau cover for your truck.

Mine always leaked at the seams. I now have an Advantage Torza (Torzo?) and am very pleased with it. Soft cover, attached aluminum bars, and trifold design. Single piece of vinyl, and just $300 on sale. Quick attach/detach entire cover with 4 latches that grab the edge of the bed. It simply works!

The aluminum might have been better choices even hear in Hot Atlanta. In fact I asked if they would sell me just the aluminum skin. My idea was to take the original panel apart, epoxy the new aluminum skin to it (thus covering the cracks and fixing the problems) and reassemble the panels. That’s when they said “they wouldn't not be deemed safe if you were to just glue a panel on to your existing one”.

As for the rubber seals leaking; BackFlip sent me a whole set of rubber seals at about the 18 months mark because the original seals on the side rail ripped at the hinge locations. Two things about this problem that are worth noting:

1. The original rubber seal on the side rails where garbage and most likely a design flaw, the replacement seals worked much better and only took +/- 15min to install (to date I have had no issue with them). The hardest part was cleaning off the old ones.

2. BackFlip sent me a complete rubber seal replacement kit way more than I expected or asked for. The kit included all the rubber seals even the ones between the panels. I only replaced rubber seals on the side rails so far because they were the only seals I had a problem with.

For me the biggest problem was the panels, they just did not live up to their hype.

The original design failed in the heat, as the glue would soften. I do not know exactly what the 2nd Gen did different.

When it first looked for a tonneau cover I wanted two things: low profile and the ability to lock. Now I see that warranty should have been number three, however with the company saying that it won’t fade or deteriorate I did not think the warranty would be an issue. I was wrong.
When you are looking for a new tonneau cover make sure you look at the length of the warranty.

I have zero problems with mine. They changed the materials used in the seems. Mine doesn't leak at all and it hasn't faded

I've had mine for 5 years and it's ok. Hasn't faded too much and still looks good. It definitely leaks, but it still otherwise works and looks good despite Idaho winters and Virginia summers. I wanted mine to last 5 yrs and that's what it did. I'm excited to remove it (probably next year) and go another direction with my truck bed. Until then, she's just fine ;).

Hey, where did you purchase this one?? I pick up my Pro4x on Saturday, but I can't find a cover under $500 for it. Thanks ;)

I have the torza top on my truck, and i bought it used so its a few years old. It still looks good, and is pretty water tight. If you spray up under the lip it will leak, but regular rain stays out.

Its also utility rails friendly and easy on easy off.

There is a vendor here that can give you a little discount through TT.

I had the older model as well and live in Georgia, the heat killed that thing. Faded like it was nobodies business and the icing on the cake last year with all the snow/ice we had was the panel actually separating and breaking off. I see some people with the newer version and seem to be happy with it, me personally I will never buy another Bak product ever again.

I feel your pain. I live in Georgia and my Backflip is faded and leaks so bad in heavy rain it's like I have no cover on at all, The panels are all cracked, the seals are all failing and falling apart. Every-time I close it I need to walk around the truck bed and force the panels into the tracks.
I contact Backflip to see if i could purchase new replacement panels and was told I would be better off replacing the whole thing. Blue Sky Water

The new model (even the cheap one) are aluminum panels. They seem to be power coated and I've had 0 problems...I treat it rough too. I've also had NO leak problems.

I almost bought one for my T a few months ago. I looked like a good product. Easy on and off. And the Bak Box was a nice feature as well. I stopped into my local truck shop and inquired about it. I wanted something that did not leak. I was replacing a vinyl cover that always leaked. The owner of the shop said he stopped carrying them because he lost money on returns due to fading and leaking from Bak's 'patented leak proof hinges.' They did not honor the warranty for a vendor. I am sure they would not do it for the individual either. this after a year. So well within the warranty term limit. They were actually removing one when I was there. So I got a look at the fading and where it was leakig from. It is too bad because, again, this looked like a great product. I went with an ARE. Love it. No leaks and it looks great on my T. Although it is a bit tricky storing it when I need it off.
