Is it also loud on acceleration? Could be a bad fan clutch.

I recall a member here a while back complaining of a whooshing sound on acceleration. Turned out to be a bad fan clutch. Even posted a Youtube video:

Yep, that was me. Sure enough a bad fan clutch. Had it replaced and it doesn't do it anymore. It was crazy loud and dangerous because the truck wouldn't accelerate properly.

My fan is loud on startup. It only does it on the first start of the day, but it's not consistent. Sometime it does, sometimes it doesn't. Seems like I have to start driving it for it to turn back off. Doesn't seem like its working as intended. Probably taking it in to have it looked at on next oil change.

My 2005 Titan used to have the same loud noise at startup. I attributed it to some crazy effort to make acceleration from stop seem more exciting. Ten years later I noted the same noise at startup but a new noise and a vibration tied to when the cooling system engaged the AC fan on a very hot Florida morning as I moved out on my way to work. The fan was replaced a year ago to cut down on it's vibrations which ran up through the frame and made the noise louder in the cab than outside it.

Have a QX80 that consistently howled at start up, along with a cold weather tick.
Infiniti replaced the fan clutch and the issue went away, along with the cold weather tick.
Also have a 17 Titan.
Both QX80 and Titan occasionally do the same thing.
The way it was explained to me on the QX80 was that the fan clutch is electronically controlled with a mechanical backup.
The electronics test the clutch at startup periodically, which is supposed to explain the inconsistency.

I had bought a brand new 2019 SV CC back in February 2020. My family and I were on our way back from Ocean City, Maryland on Memorial Day and we were at a stop light. Light went green and it sounded like an 18 wheeler was pulling away. I thought maybe the sound was from the old 90’s Chevy truck in front of me, but about an hour later the “whooshing” sound was coming from my truck. I noticed the RPM’s were stuck around 2k in first and second gear and the sound would decrease with increased gears/speed. Well, I called the Nissan dealer and the tech was able to get the same result. New fan clutch on order. Due to Corona, and limited delivery/shop hours for Saturday, I was loaned a 2019 Pathfinder Rock Creek edition until the truck is repaired on Monday with Nissan footing the bill. Glad to have the longer factory warranty. My last Titan was a 2011 and I traded that in on this one. Never had an issue in 9+ years other than driver seat tear on the left top edge from me sliding my butt out the door.

I’ve had this same issue on my truck. Extremely loud fan noise and it won’t accelerate properly. Dealer told me that was normal operation. Thinking seriously about finding a new dealer.

Definitely take it to another dealer. Mine was doing the same thing and my dealer gave me no trouble at all replacing the fan clutch. They got my truck back to me all back to normal the same day I booked the appointment.

That being said, the fan is loud when it's on (e.g., for a while after a cold start or idling for a long period in high ambient temps). The same is true for most mechanical belt-driven fans.

I want to thank you for this thread. This thread me realize it wasn't normal. Took it back to the dealer last week and they confirmed the problem and this time fixed it! My truck is like new! I just purchased it a few months back and thought it was normal, but its not and yes same problem clutch fan.

I have a 2017 S and my clutch fan engages randomly, have an appointment end of july.

no reason form the clutch fan to engage on the highway at 100 km/h for like 10 minutes...

hopefully they find and fix the problem as its really annoyingnly loud and not to say the truck accelerates differently.

When I'm inside, and turn the A/C off and let the fan run on high, it makes a very loud clunking sound. Here's the odd thing, I roll ANY window down, and the sound goes away. It's just when I have the vent running on high. It almost sounds like a rough idle, but it's the fan.
