JBA Cat Back... it's loud!

11530 Views 33 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  cajun56
Hi all - I have read this forum for a little over a year now, and am very grateful for all the helpful advice; thanks to all!

I finally decided to buy and install the JBA cat back system. I plan to add an Ingen CAI soon, and then maybe the UpRev tune.
It's ALOT louder in the cab than I expected. Maybe I'm just being an old fart, but this thing makes my ears rattle at about 1600 Rpm. Is there a way to ease the in-cab drone? Dyno mat? I love the sound outside, just wish I could ease the drone inside. At 70mph, the drone is obnoxious.

Does anyone have any ideas? Will the CAI change this for better or worse?

Thanks, Mike:huh:

I think thats the nature of the beast... Im not sure much will change the sound as far as any other performance mods. The way it sounds is the way it is going to be... it might break in a little bit over time but it might get louder. I dont have the JBA evol so i cant comment on that but I have had both magnaflow and flowmaster mufflers on my previous vehicle and after a break in period it seemed a little louder. As far as using dynamat or any other sound preventing product it would be trial and error trying to dial it in to try and sound proof the cab. Id say your only real fix is if you dont like the way it sounds is change the muffler.
A member reduced drone by inserting a Vibrant resonator
in the tail pipe. I don't know how much it would reduce
the overall volume.

Cut the exhaust pipe just after the last hanger and it will cut drone like nothing else you can do.I have did it as well as several others here.PM suddenurge and Jaho and they will confirm this.No one has yet to do this and not be happy with it.The length of the pipe changes every thing.

When im tired of listning to my jba exhaust I just crank up the music lol. Solves the prob very quickly
From what I've read here on TitanTalk, I did't think the JBA was as loud as some of the other systems. Is this true? I haven't heard of others saying it was too loud. I was considering getting the JBA Evol system, I may have to re-think that.
I have had my JBA Evol for a week now and love it. It isn't that loud, as far as performance exhausts go, but there is a drone. Changing the length of pipe, as previously posted, should help. I am leaving mine as is, I like my music loud so it all works out for me in the end anyway

PS - the JBA hauls A$$!!!! Punching it makes my drone problem go away :)
Thanks for the responses! Never heard of a Vibrant resonator.

Yes, all the research I did also stated the JBA to be the mildest sound with the best performance. Exactly what i was looking for. I do need to get it hot and retorqe the clamps if that matters.

"Cut the exhaust pipe just after the last hanger"
How does dumping the exh under bed help? Seems as if that may create more noise and also allow fumes to gather under truck while stopped.
Also, kinda scarry to start cutting on something i just spent money on.

The overall length of the exhaust system affects the resonance frequency. I'm not a puppy anymore either, and after installing the 18" Mag, something had to be done about the drone. I cut the tailpipe off about 1.5" after the last hanger, and the drone was reduced by about 60%. I'm very happy with the results. The overall sound got a touch deeper in tone but not louder.

I've done a few sound clips before and after in the cab, but it's hard to hear the difference in the recordings compared to live in person. I've heard in cab recordings on the JBA, and I immediately noticed the high drone level in the recording.

Many times in general forum postings you read about how great a new mod is, but rarely see any negative comments on their new investment. Case in point, my new S&B CAI startled the hell out of me after I romped on the throttle for the first time...lol. Before that I read 500 postings on it, and nobody said it's loud enough to rattle any loose change in the console.

Bottomline, it won't get any more tolerable, unless you get the saw out and change the exhaust length or add a resonator. Adding a resonator will quiet down the overall sound level, a hacksaw won't, good luck!

Simple addition of an "H"pipe 18-24" upstream from the mufflers will help back the resonance off a few decibels.

Thanks Sudden Urge... "The overall sound got a touch deeper in tone but not louder." Thats is exactly what i am looking for!

One last question.. Did you cut the inch and a half off and then re-attach the tip or just chop it off? Trust me, I will rapidly chunk the tip for the lack of loosing my crowns.

Thanks guys!
had one on my gmc, sounded great until towing then it became very obnoxious i guess its the nature of the beast.good luck

I cut a total of 12" off, 1.5" after the last factory hanger. I'm running with no tip, I like the stealth look. People hear it and don't see the outlet.

I got the JBA it is not that loud compared to the Banks. It does seem louder to me in the cold though.
Sudden -It can't hurt to try it; I would have to cut pipe anyway to add an additional resonator.

I-force - I have single exhaust, H pipe wont work if its works like a cross over pipe. And, why are you reading a Titan site with a Tundra nick? haha j/k..

And yes, i would agree Banks is much louder. I saw that settup on another Titan before I bought the JBA. Banks was higher pitched too IMO.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I will try trimming some length off the tail pipe in the next couple days.

Thanks again,
Mike
If you can't stand it and want to sell it let me know. I would like first dibbs.

The JBA is a single exhaust with a Y-pipe. No place to install a H-pipe.
I have the JBA and it sure doesn't drone much IMO.

I'd wish somebody would make up their mind...little drone or mucho drone? :upsidedow

I was thinking about the JBA system but now you guys got me re-thinking....I wouldn't care if it gets loud on the outside, but too much drone will drive me nuts!
