Leaking Doug Thorley Headers. What to do?

29744 Views 194 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  JauntyBishop
I bought a set of stainless ceramic coated DT headers in April. I installed them and I thought everythig was ok. In May I bought the uprev and did the logs so i could get my first map tuned. It turned out It looked looked like I had a leak on the left bank, So I took it back apart figuring I had messed something up when I installed it. Once I had it apart I could see the leaks and it was pretty clear why.

So I called Nick at DT and told him what was going on and he said he wanted to get the header back so they could "fix" it. The problem with this is I live in Florida and its going to take 5 days for it to get to him, then they are going to have to fix it, then its 5 days back and I cant be without my truck for two to three weeks. So we agreed that they would get me a new one but they didnt have anymore so it would be about 5 weeks but he wanted me to call back after 2 weeks and see how things were going. I called again after 2 and a half weeks to check on things and Nick tiold me they were in welding and I should call again in a week and a half. So today I called and he tells me that he was wrong the that the headers being made now are the mild steel not the stainless and he still thinks I should send the one I have to him to have it fixed. I got really pissed because I paid alot for the headers and I just want them not to leak. I cant even get my e-tunes done because of the leak. Another problem is that it sounds like ****.
In his defense its only been 4 weeks so its not like its gone on longer then we agreed but today he didn't even give me a time frame for when I would get them.

I am asking you guys what you think I should do and am I wrong for being upset?

Im trying to be nice.
Nice doesn't cut it with folks in the automotive industry. Especially with aftermarket companies that feel they have a lock on a product or design and the options and competition are limited. Sorry, but nice got you the run around and nothing but lip service. I completely understand that confrontation can be uncomfortable and the rational is that if you play nice, they'll accommodate you and work harder to find a solution to keep you happy. It's not gonna happen with Doug Thorley and Nick as your contact...

On 6/23/11, I got a PM from a member that wants help installing headers. He told me Nick from DT said the headers would ship by the end of the week so let's say the 29th as a ship date. That's not 5 weeks! I haven't talked to the member, so I'm not sure if they shipped yet. But his shipment quote is not 5 weeks and means Nick isn't being honest...

It sounds to me like you're getting jerked around because you're being nice. I can tell you that folks aren't knocking down the door buying 2011 QX56 DT headers so Nick doesn't make any sense...

At the very least try and get an honest answer from them when the "TITAN" headers will be available and what kind of "customer service" they're going to extend to you for their mistake and your inconvenience...

Sorry for that costly idea.. I just don't see why would DT think that the QX and titan headers would be interchangeable..:bangit: Freakin' experts. 2 to 3 weeks of waiting left, they sould give you a discount. Nice to have patience with those "experts" at DT.

It was a good idea BB. It was very close to working. I like messing around with that ****. It helps the ten weeks go by faster. I am lucky that its the drivers side because I can get the gasket out without lifting the motor.

They have built 2 sets of headers for the Titan/QX since I was told they would build me a new set. 1 was a regular steel set and the other was a Stainless. If he bought them they should be titan/QX headers and will look like the pics I took. Can you get him to send you a pic of the flanges when he gets them please? did he get stainless or steel?

Haven't heard back from him, so I'll assume he got the same BS you've been getting. I would hope after we/you discovered DT screwed up that they wouldn't send out any additional '11 QX headers to Titan owners...
Happy as can be with my NISMO's :) Hang in there!
Alright guys! I was just about sold on the Thorley's until I read this thread. I have been looking at Stillens but have not pulled the trigger yet. I have only read one place that anyone had problems with the DT's. Is there any HP differences between the two? Which would you buy? Sorry if I thread jacked!!

Danblp gained only .08 in the 1/4 going from Dtlt's to Nismos so I'd guess stillens & dtlt perform the same or within .05 of ea other. I gained .25 with mine over oem manifolds with cats. You gain anything with that 07 IM? I want one but dnt want to waste $180.

Most of the quickest Titans run the Stillens.
I would not buy DT unless they confirmed they were the original style with the oval ports and w/o elongated bolt holes. Installing headers is a big enough PITA w/o messing with headers that don't fit. AFAIK, the only problem with Stillen was that they previously had them way over priced. They have now reduced their pricing, per their web site. There have been posts about both DT and Stillen that they will rust (as do the oem manifolds). OBX also had long tube headers, but it was posted that they don't fit and you have to dent them to get them installed. I have not seen any posts indicated that they have fixed the problem.

Even with my problems my uprev says that my truck is going 0-60 in 7.13 sec. It makes my cousins stock 2011 hemi ram 4x4 look slow and its not. Also his truck is only an extended cab. My truck has 106,000 miles on it too. Nothing against the ram I am just trying to give you a real world reference.
I think I am probably just going to buy the Stillens and have the re-ceramic coated to try and prevent rust. Dunno, ready to go faster though!!

I have confidence in stillen. they seem consistent with their products. my B-pipes fit right on.

My bpipes fit right on with my DTLT's:) DT has some issues right now only because of that Nick guy. He's making them look bad and they don't even know it!
we should start a petition to get that schmuck fired lol
Damn...what an interesting read. Sucks when you see a good guy get screwed over multiple times...happened to me one too many times.

The only comment I'll make regarding DT is agreeing with the previous post about how quickly one employee can trash the entire reputation of a company, as well as the comment about choosing words wisely when representing more than yourself on the Internet.

I can honestly say after reading this thread I will no longer even consider any DT headers nor recommend them to anyone. Best of luck on getting your situation fixed.
My headers are 4th in line. They are in welding. I was told to call back in a couple weeks.
Let me make sure everyone that still reads this thread knows... the carbon steel Doug Thorley headers have the correct Titan port configuration. I have the newest batch installed and they look perfect and seal perfectly.

I think that the best option for anyone that deals with someone at a company that isn't being cooperative is to talk to their superior (especially with a company with as much history in the industry as Thorley).

I see what your saying but Nick is the only person you can speak to at DT. Frank is gone and the president of the company is the only one besides Nick (This is what I was told)
This was posted on 6-16-2011. In two weeks it will have been 8 weeks.
Anthony,
No worries man! I do have a run of the modified ports due back next week from ceramic OR I am having them do a run of the conventional stainless oval port design due in approx 4-5 weeks. I have the conventional "OG" design mild steel versions in stock now.
It's a damn shame....

I guess Stillen it is then.
