Leaking Doug Thorley Headers. What to do?

29751 Views 194 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  JauntyBishop
I bought a set of stainless ceramic coated DT headers in April. I installed them and I thought everythig was ok. In May I bought the uprev and did the logs so i could get my first map tuned. It turned out It looked looked like I had a leak on the left bank, So I took it back apart figuring I had messed something up when I installed it. Once I had it apart I could see the leaks and it was pretty clear why.

So I called Nick at DT and told him what was going on and he said he wanted to get the header back so they could "fix" it. The problem with this is I live in Florida and its going to take 5 days for it to get to him, then they are going to have to fix it, then its 5 days back and I cant be without my truck for two to three weeks. So we agreed that they would get me a new one but they didnt have anymore so it would be about 5 weeks but he wanted me to call back after 2 weeks and see how things were going. I called again after 2 and a half weeks to check on things and Nick tiold me they were in welding and I should call again in a week and a half. So today I called and he tells me that he was wrong the that the headers being made now are the mild steel not the stainless and he still thinks I should send the one I have to him to have it fixed. I got really pissed because I paid alot for the headers and I just want them not to leak. I cant even get my e-tunes done because of the leak. Another problem is that it sounds like ****.
In his defense its only been 4 weeks so its not like its gone on longer then we agreed but today he didn't even give me a time frame for when I would get them.

I am asking you guys what you think I should do and am I wrong for being upset?

Still waiting.........
I was told last Tuesday they would be in any day and that he would call me.
Its awsome I drive my truck and it sounds like it has a rusted out exhaust system. It pisses me off everytime I F*****g drive it. I keep the windows up and the radio turned up so I dont start punching the wheel in a fit of rage. I have been considering buying the a different set to fix the problem and then selling the DT's when I finnaly get my new ones. I spent the money on wheels tho. It looks ok but sounds like ***.

Sorry to hear bro, the wheels and stance look badazz..

Found it funny about turning the stereo up. Not to rub salt, I used the stereo as back ground sound to my awesome sounding exhaust. My wife tells me to turn up the music and I tell no 'cause I'm about to downshift or accelerate..:teeth:

Music? Who needs it when you have a VK56!!! FTW :)

Sorry to hear about all your problems with DT! I would have done the same thing! I would have got my $ back though & went with Stillen LT's!

The stuff coming out of the tip is bad ***. The stuff from my left fender well is ****. Try this, loosen up one of your headers just enough so that the gas queefs out between the gasket and the flange on the header and tell me if you like it.:D I do agree the 5.6 shouldn't need a radio.

Before I figured out I had a problem I would go under an overpass and jab the throttle to scare the old people that drive around in Hernando county:teethmast

The nice thing about the JBA is you can get the sound to bounce off cars/trucks as you leave them at the light as long as they are on your right.

LOL! That's how my Banks is too. The people to the right definitely get an ear full! :)

I bet yours is loud. I don’t have an intake yet so the trucks still pulling air through that stock box. On my 350z the intake made the exhaust sound a lot better. I want to get the 4" relentless intake.

Have you checked the latest, you can jigsaw a 4" intake, with nice test results..

The headers sould be back from coating this afternoon or tuesday morning. So I should have them by the 12th.
I have been tempted to drive my T into Nick's office and ask him whats going on as he has a mouth full of Titan bumper...

Really pisses me off that they are dragging their feet so badly on this. It took them 6 weeks to build and coat 25 sets of headers for me. Why is it taking so long to make this run of them?
I can't believe they are taking so long to get you the new headers. I ordered my DT long tubes on 8-9-11, they said it would take extra time as they had to be coated. They actually shipped out on the 11th from Cali I believe and I had them at my door on the 17th or 18th.
They did correct the issue with the flanges having round ports. They are back to oval ports again.
Hope they get to you early and good luck.

I think you bought the mild steel. Mine are SS. I dont believe they ever changed the mild steel design. I know the new ones will be oval thats why I waited so long. The first replacements they made were round ports.
I'm not sure what metal they are made of. I got the polished ceramic coated ones. I just know from previous experience with headers on other vehicles I have had that the ceramic coating dissipates heat a lot quicker than chrome or stainless. Ceramic coated headers will also never rust. I had a set of polished stainless steel headers that started rusting about a year after they were installed.
what a joke of a company.. ****ty welds that a 4th grader could do, trying to pass off crappy R&D onto the customer, then making the customer wait 8-12 weeks for a set of oval port headers while they continue selling the correct headers to new customers..

I woul'dve turned into timothy mcveigh by now if i was in your position..
FU$k DOUG THORLEY'S!!!!!!!!
GO STILLEN

Too bad Nismos can't be bought anymore thier design was flawless and headers looked nice enough to be displayed onto a mantle!!

Here's some pics Doug thorley so you can learn how to build some real headers for the titan!!!

I'm so glad i got my Nismo LT's when i did!!! Sucks to hear that such a "big name" in the racing industry would do handle themselves in a way such as this! Customer service? Non-existent...

Maybe you should look at this.

I bought the Stainless Ceramic Coated headers so I would not have any problems:bangit: You would know if you bought them they cost more.

They do good work I just got unlucky. They did not sell him the same headers I have been waiting for, thats why he got them.
Well I hope they get you taken care of on your headers. Did you have to special order the stainless headers with the ceramic coating on them. I didn't see it offered on their site but I may have over looked it. How much did they run with the coating. I specifically didn't want stainless steel only because it retains more heat than carbon steel. I live in ga so I doubt rust will ever be an issue for me, in theory anyway. I haven't had any rust on any part of my truck so far, or any of my past vehicles. The only complaint I have with my headers so far is the way they plumbed the primaries. It made it a royal pita to get to a few of the nuts at the flange. Good luck with your fight.
I truly hope you got a discount on DT frackup and their overly extended wait time for new ones. Completely unacceptable!!

There was a reason I got rid of mine and one word sums it up, NICK!!!!

I called up DT to see how they wanted to handle the rust problem after 6 months of usage, Nick was willing to work with me. But when a vendor calls you back and chews you out for posting the truth about their product on a WEB site, it's just not right.

If DT is reading this thread then :futwice:

When I go back to LT headers it won't be DT, thats for sure.
