Leaking Doug Thorley Headers. What to do?

29729 Views 194 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  JauntyBishop
I bought a set of stainless ceramic coated DT headers in April. I installed them and I thought everythig was ok. In May I bought the uprev and did the logs so i could get my first map tuned. It turned out It looked looked like I had a leak on the left bank, So I took it back apart figuring I had messed something up when I installed it. Once I had it apart I could see the leaks and it was pretty clear why.

So I called Nick at DT and told him what was going on and he said he wanted to get the header back so they could "fix" it. The problem with this is I live in Florida and its going to take 5 days for it to get to him, then they are going to have to fix it, then its 5 days back and I cant be without my truck for two to three weeks. So we agreed that they would get me a new one but they didnt have anymore so it would be about 5 weeks but he wanted me to call back after 2 weeks and see how things were going. I called again after 2 and a half weeks to check on things and Nick tiold me they were in welding and I should call again in a week and a half. So today I called and he tells me that he was wrong the that the headers being made now are the mild steel not the stainless and he still thinks I should send the one I have to him to have it fixed. I got really pissed because I paid alot for the headers and I just want them not to leak. I cant even get my e-tunes done because of the leak. Another problem is that it sounds like ****.
In his defense its only been 4 weeks so its not like its gone on longer then we agreed but today he didn't even give me a time frame for when I would get them.

I am asking you guys what you think I should do and am I wrong for being upset?

I stumbled across this thread researching headers. I have to say, it is obvious to me what is going on at DT.

Nick being the only contact there (other contacts are now gone)+super long lead times+a sudden change in product quality+owner who is never around=outsourcing.

Looking at the pics, I would even go so far as to say China. The recent DT product, where the tubes meet the flange, that's a method and quality (lack of) that I have seen on many eBay China headers. heck, there was a time a few years ago when a co-worker of mine insisted we outsource our metal tubes to China and they came back looking like the recent DT tubes. Random shape, it's not oval, not round, not consistent from tube to tube.

If DT was making these at their own facility, no way would it take so long to get them. The delays are caused by the usual problems small-medium sized companies have with inconsistent overseas manufacturers. It's difficult to get a factory you can trust, they often can't do things the same as here, and there's always delays.
If they are made here, how long could it possibly take to make them? Everything should already be jigged up and ready to go. If they need ceramic coating, a few parts can be added to an already existing order to get you the parts you need to keep your rep from being ruined. DT's take so long because the foreign factory makes them, then they get slow-boated here in a container ship. Of course, the container needs to be full before being shipped, so there's a wait for that too. Then there's customs, etc.
My main reason for mentioning this is because it is obvious, for whatever reason, that this company has changed it's goals. Whenever someone outsources, it shows that the mindset has changed from providing a product of value, to a product of max profit margin.

Hopefully I am totally wrong, maybe DT can chime in and correct me? But if I am right, it's sad that they are still charging full price for a product that is no better than other "lesser" ebay <$300 products.

I think DT taking so long to correct a problem is beyond insane. I did however order DT headers from autoanything and had them in less than a week and welds looked really good and the flange shape was very consistent. I think this issue was only on the SS headers. I got the reg ceramic coated ones and have not had any problems. I think they were around 590 bucks or so. It is amazing that they have not resolved the OPs issue yet. Completely ridiculous.

Yes you are correct this issue was only on the SS headers, no worries with the CS ones.

Are they any better? I got such a big scare from this thread that I just coughed up $750 for a set of Stillen LT's for my Titan and $450 for a set JBA's for my 2002 Tundra. Ouch!!! but i would rather pay that than fight the fight and wait the wait you had...

Hope you enjoy them!!!!

PS, DT should have given you some of those 75RWHP stickers for free for all the trouble.
And it only took three months. Hope they fit.

No I am not happy. Here is what happend. Nick charged me shipping on these. He called and asked if he could do a $200 security untill I return the old ones and I get the invoice and it says $245. $45 for freight. What bull poop. I am pretty sure thats illegal. Nick did not say he was going to charge my card $245. He said it would be $200. I also have to pay for the return shipping on the old set so because the first set I bought were bad it is going to cost me an extra 90 bucks? I dont think so... I have had it with him. I really hate bad mouthing someone but he is worthless. I hope he reads this one I could care less. 6 months of waiting and he did this. I am going to go on every damn forum and link to thread and see how that helps business for him. he never tried to help me out and he always made me feel like this was all my fault because I wouldnt send them back to be repaired. Well I did not want repaired headers i wanted unrepaired new ones.:flame:

Anyway... about the new set, I have not seen them but in one of the pics my wife text me I can tell it has regular round holes for the studs and as you can see the ports are ovals. I can only pray that they work.

You are way smarter then I am. I should have bought the Stillens F**k DT.
They are a lot more but I can tell you they are on the ball. I ordered them online and 2 minutes later got a confirmation Email and about 2 hours later shipping info. Margaret Lo corrisponded with me via Email and they know how to run a business.

LoseMyMind, I am sorry you are having this much BS and I will help you make sure (or atleast I will try) DT doesnt sell a single set of headers to anyone on this this forum or TundraSolutions for that matter!!!
WOW!!!
I can't believe what you have gone through.
I have been saving $$$ for headers and waiting to see what the outcome was going to be with your DT's.
That being said, I was wanting to get the DT's (to add in front of my Berks) but after seeing what you went through, NO THANKS!
I hope the new set fits and seals properly for you, but I'm not willing to to get slapped in the face for my hard earned $$$.
Tundra Community has the back of the slow :)D) Titan community. Should have just sent him a new set.... Think my next set will be one from the competition with jet hot coating. :bangit:
Oh man this discussion on the TS site just took off.... Look at some of the comments. Made me laugh!!!!

Review Never buy doug thorley headers ever again!!! - Toyota Tundra Forums : Tundra Solutions Forum
I know this might sound ghetto but I read somewhere on this forum that someone used J.B. Weld

I ended up buying a new set. Good luck with your issue.

They aren't on Twitter but they are on Facebook.

LoseMyMind, here is some sound advice from the Tundra people...

The poster on the Nissan forum should dispute the charges with his credit card company. The credit card company makes the decision on who deserves the money and the decision is final. There's a good chance he'll walk away not paying a penny. He should ask for billing disputes when he calls his cc company.

if he wont fix the shipping I am going to go on every forum for every car they sell headers for and do the same thing.

That Tundra forum is great.
did you see they started linking the comments on dt's website to your thread.
LooseMyMind: You should change your signature to something like "Horrible Quality DT Long tubes"
