Long term storage of the Titan

Folks I need some information. I may be PCSing to Europe and have to do something with my Titan. I bought it last Nov and really don't want to get rid of my truck (too much fun) but have never stored a vehicle. What are the major concerns with long term storage of a vehicle? The truck would be in storage for two years. After that time I would save a bundle of miles, but the truck will just be sitting there. Selling may be an option but want to keep the Titan.

Thanks

Personaly I would sell and buy new in 2 years in the long run it will be better for both you and the truck however if this is not an option best thing is to ask the dealer ( if reputable ) for best advice. My choice of storage would be a climate controled environment.

Wow, two years is a long time for it to just sit idle. Sitting that long is not good at all. It would be best if someone could drive it long enough to get it up to temperature every now and then.
For short term storage, i've seen it recomended to add a gasoline stabilizer to the gas. Change the oil, take each spark plug out and add a little fresh oil to each cylinder and reinstall the plugs. Raise all four tires off of the floor. Give it a good wash and wax and hope for the best.
Like I said though two years is a long time, if it were me I think I would just sell and buy new.
Good luck.

that's a long time........

The Titan Manual says to remove the negative battery cable also..it would die in 2 years for sure.....I'd be getting someone to nurture/use it once a month instead of let it sit for 2 years or sell it. Good luck.

Just doing a quick google tells me that the costs start at around $120/month for indoor, enclosed, secured locations. http://www.buxtonmotorsports.com So that would be like $2800+ over 2 years. Don't forget that you'll probably need to keep some kind of insurance on the truck for that period of time.

I also know that cars/trucks that get stored outside tend to turn into insect/small mammal habitats. One of the Silverados I demo'd last year had a rather large wasp nest in the driver side mirror.

The titan would have to be run at some point just to keep the a/c lubrication good otherwise you would have big probs. Fuel must be either stabilized or drained most will only last one year with chemicals. You will also run into flat spots on the tires from sitting. Good luck

i also suggest selling it and when you get back purchase a new one....less risk of some major problems

I would sell it. With it sitting for that long, you will run into dry rot problems with any hoses and tires.

I wouldn't sell it. It's not that big of a deal to store it, especially if your in the dry southwest. Do some research and you'll find people do it all the time. There are things that need to be done but it can be handled. Good luck!

Dude, sell it. I regret keeping mine. I could've saved a massive amount of money on both payment and insurance. plus when you get back there will be some other bad *** truck to buy.
Why arent they allowing you to ship your vehicle there?
I know most of the places allow that but if you just want to get a cheap beater there, you can usually get one from a soldier that is leaving for a few hundred bucks.
The military will store it for you but if you decide to pay for your own they will re-emburse you after you get back, which sucks while your paying it but its almost like putting money in savings when you get it back.
You will also be getting COLA while your there$$$$$$
One more thing, Do you use USAA for your insurance? If you dont and you plan on driving while your there, get USAA because it has international rates so you wont have to get it from the host nation. The host nation will charge you about 240 bucks a month for insurance. USAA is the cheapest you can get period.
Are you in the army or what?

I would sell it as well. There is the psychological factor (cost) about what may happen while you are overseas. Storage units get broken into and if its parked with a friend or family member it can cause unneeded grief if something happens when they are helping you. If it was a year I'd say keep it. Two years is easy... sell. The depreciation will not be offset by low miles. I leave the country every year for five consecutive months. I have Tundra. I change the oil before I store and when I return. If someone is available I ask them to drive it once a month for 10+ miles, run the AC and on a straight road engage 4WD. I do nothing else. The downside is I still pay for insurance, storage and depreciation. The Titan is a great truck now but in two model years of improvements you'll have a bigger smile.

Flat spots on tires aren't a problem with radial tires. This was a problem with bias ply tires. While radial tires can develop a flat spot it doesn't have a memory of it or affected by cold, i.e., rolling on a square tire. The need to elevate a car off of its tires is long past.

Safe travels.

Thanks for the input. If I move I will probably sell but I like to know my options. I figured sitting for an extended period wasn't really a good idea. I'm not sure the military would ship two vehicles and the few times I've been in Europe the streets weren't designed for a truck this size. I use USAA but wasn't aware of the international rates, thanks. The bright spot is I would have an excuse to get a new truck in a couple of years. Like to see what Nissan does since I really liked their first effort.

I wouldn't want to try to park a Titan anywhere in Europe. Nor would I want to put gas in it...
