Major front end failure!

My front end collapsed Saturday afternoon as I was poking down a bumpy dirt road doing less than 5 miles per hour. I heard a loud "clunk" by the right front tire and then realized I couldn't turn either direction without hearing a metal on metal scraping sound.

I immediately returned to the camp and parked the truck where I could take a better look. It was pretty obvious what had happened. The front stabilizer bar had collapsed and bent forward causing it to rub on the front tires whenever the wheel was turned. This sheared off the inside of the left rim and sent those shaved pieces into the tire. The tire went flat, of course.

I had to call a tow truck Sunday morning and have them pick it up and take it to the nearest Nissan dealership (60 miles away in Tallahassee, Florida). I was at the dealer this morning when they opened up and the service manager said he'd never seen anything like it. I'm still waiting to hear back from them as I imagine they're all standing around scratching their heads.

I live 100 miles away from Tallahassee in Panama City. Luckily I had the use of another truck and was able to drive back after I left the dealer.

The truck has 8350 miles on it and had the brakes worked on last week here in Panama City. The local dealer's paperwork simply indicates that they turned the rotors. The only modification I have is prerunnergreg's leveling kit. I don't see how that could be the problem, either.

Obviously I'm anxious to see how this one plays out. It's a PITA not having your truck but an even bigger pain when it's broken down in another town.

Damn... Hey did you take the leveling kit off before you sent it to the dealership?
I had no way of doing that. The truck broke down on a plantation in south Georgia way out in the middle of nowhere.

I was 150 miles from home at the time with no place to take it.

I hope they don't screw with you. I hate when dealers say stuff like "we noticed you tinted the windows and we're sure that's why your transmission failed".

My wife's OZ Lancer had the paint peel off the ground effects (from them not prepping the bodywork) under the drivers door. They asked questions from "what type of wax / wash do you use" to "what type of shoes does your wife wear?"
When the bodyshop guy came out and pulled a 12" section of paint off with his hands they agreed to repaint it.

Good luck with yours.

I noticed you have the 4x4, where you offroading when this happened? I also have the 4x4 and would hate for that to happen while offroading. I only have 750 miles on it. Let us know what the dealer says.

The joints bent downward along with the sway bar on each side. It was the joint that was rubbing on the rims.

I was on a flat grass trail pulling back onto a bumpy dirt grade when it popped. Couldn't have been moving more than 3 or 4 miles per hour. I was following a dog wagon and about two dozen people on horseback (participating in a field trial at the Dixie Plantation).

Dude, I would have to imagine that leveling kit will become an issue with the dealer. At that slow speed I can't believe you had that much damage. My truck is driven off-road alot and at much higher speeds and I don't have any problems! Good Luck.

My truck did this as well when I was installing prg kit. I called greg and he had me just lift up on the sway bar with a jack and it popped right back into place. It's scary to think this could happen while driving.
I hope this isn't a problem? I can't even see how the sway bar can do that??? When I installed my prg kit I actually disconnected the sway bar links. Greg said it makes the install easier, which it did. It didn't seem to have any kind of pressure on it that could cause that. I am defenitly looking forward to hearing the outcome.

Still no word from the dealer in Tallahassee.

Greg quickly responded to my e-mail this morning. I called him and we talked for at least 15 minutes about the possibilities of what might have happened. I really appreciate his concern, he's just as surprised about this as I am.

If I don't hear from the dealer in the next hour then I'm giving them a call.

The dealer just called and said he had a Nissan rep in the office today. They looked at the truck and said they can't imagine what would've caused it to collapse but that the warranty wouldn't touch it.

When I asked for the Nissan rep's name I was put on hold for a couple of minutes then told they'd look at it further and have someone with more authority call me back.

He asked if I had been pulled out of a ditch by a chain b/c the metal was gouged out on either end of the sway bar. I explained that the truck has never been stuck and I've never pulled anyone out, either. Besides, I would've used the tow hooks and wouldn't have attached a chain to the sway bar. I guess it was an honest question as the truck does have quite a bit of mud on it.

Not sounding good right now. More to follow.

Man, that sux. I could almost understand somthing like that happening if you had hit an obstacle like a large rock or stump. But just driving down a dirt road?
Like the others, hope they don't give ya a bunch of grief about it and fix it hassle free.
Luck to ya.

was the sway bar still attached at the center mounting points ?
I honestly don't know. You can see where it was bent forward in the pictures and the joints were fouled as well.

I couldn't see the center point so I'm not sure how it looks.

The truck actually settled a little further down when I was underneath it. It scared the hell out me so I didn't get back down there.

I've been off-roading with the AC kit (Daystar) and have had no problems.
The AC kit has to put more stress on the front end than the PRG kit.
I would have purchased the PRG kit if it would have been out when I purchased the AC kit.

Here's the lastest:

The dealership never called me back yesterday afternoon as they'd promised. I had the service rep's home phone number so I called him last night. He said I should receive a call and an estimate from another guy at the dealership this morning.

They called and gave me an estimate of $1,895.11 to replace the sway bar, both sway bar links, both front wheels, one front tire, and an alignment. They'll also charge me for the tow but that price wasn't listed. I'm sure it'll be a doozy since the guy had to travel nearly 90 miles roundtrip.

They're rather adamant about this not being a warranty issue. I have asked for the Nissan rep to call me but haven't spoken to him so far. I have obvious concerns that I want to discuss with him.

The dealership keeps treating this issue as if I struck something with the truck. I've explained that it's never been wrecked, never been stuck, never been towed, never pulled anyone out who was stuck, etc. They tried to get me to turn in an insurance claim and said they were sure it would be covered. When I told them I'm an insurance agent and have written my own policies with various companies for nearly 12 years, they were quick to back down from that scenario.

Prerunnergreg has been really concerned and we talked twice yesterday on the phone. I'm just waiting on the Nissan rep's call now and what will probably be his inevitable declination of warranty work.
