Part 1: Stock Evaluation

Our Titan XD has been poked and prodded, and the next upgrade we are working on is a DPF-back exhaust. Before we begin development, we like to take a peek at the stock version to determine which upgrades we can make to the design. Our first observation was that this exhaust is, well, plain. Not to worry; our goal is to spice up the design a bit to give this Titan more to show off.

You will have to excuse the mud coating on the bottom of our XD. All we can say is the team enjoyed “testing” the Titan’s suspension maybe a bit too much.

Mishimoto's Titan XD

Directly under the Titan is a rather large catalytic converter bolted to the diesel particulate filter (DPF). This takes up a large portion of the exhaust system, and we want to leave it intact for emissions reasons.

The section that we intend to replace is the piping after the DPF that extends from the back of the Titan. We will design a replacement for the piping section that clamps to the DPF and has a much better looking exhaust tip than stock.

Coming Up!

Next up is a look at how we fabricate our exhaust, as well as a look at our unique plan for the tip section. Until then, sound off in the comments section and let us know what you would like to see created for the Titan XD.

It'll look nice I'm sure. But the choke point is the cat and emissions. Warranty is overrated for a big shop like you guys. Just do it!!!!

You do realize that they are trying to create marketable solutions for other owners of the new XD... who may need to worry about warranty issues... This isn't just a one-off build-it-and-they-will-come rules-be-damned build... Like it or hate it, I'm just glad that the new XD has some aftermarket support to provide improvements to the manufacturer's design shortcomings... We didn't have that in the early days of the gasser back in '04...

Im sure there wont be that many, but there will be people that want to rip all the emissions off, tune it, bigger injectors, 18" lift on 40's, etc etc etc. Look how many people do it with brand new F350s and 3500s right now. A lot of them flat out dont care for their warranty. So i wouldn't say there isnt a market, but granted, not a large one either.

lol.. Well we now know why we don't have the same aftermarket support as the big 3..

Thanks bro.

Thanks for the kind words! At this point, due to emissions concerns we will not be able to offer a DPF-delete kit to go with our exhaust. However, this is not to say that we won't look into offering this in the future if enough requests are made and circumstances allow.

Part 2: Exhaust Fabrication

We are back with a much needed update on the Titan XD exhaust. Since our last post covering the stock Titan XD exhaust, we’ve come up with a design of our own.

The first step in bringing our prototype from design to reality was to create a jig to use for fabrication. We started by taking measurements from the Titan, then fired up the waterjet, and sliced our largest jig to date. It had to be sizeable enough to accommodate the four-inch piping designated for the Titan.

Now that the jig was complete, we could get to fabrication. Creating a jig on the waterjet usually results in a spot-on prototype in a relatively short time. This was the same case here and, when our prototype was complete and on the truck, it fit like a dream.

The Final Prototype

Now that fitment was confirmed, we could proceed with the final product. With some patience, the design was finalized and looking great! The exhaust will be offered in your choice of black or polished tips and will be constructed from 304 stainless steel. Durable, and easy on the eyes!

One interesting feature is a dump option that our engineer, Dan, included in the design. You can choose to install the entire exhaust as pictured above, or you can remove the back section for a dump. This is helpful if you are off-roading with the XD and want to protect your exhaust. The tip can be reinstalled on the dump or you can leave the slash tip. We will leave the customization to you.

So does it exit the truck right at the corner of the bumper area? Did you notice or see any performance gains with going to a larger DPF back pipe?
You got it, the exhaust exits at the corner of the bumper, or you can remove the last pipe section for a dump. We did not test this exhaust for power gains because without doing a DPF delete, we do not expect there to be any regardless of the pipe size.
