Misleading Fuel Gauge

Well my gauge is lying to me and caused me to run out of gas last week. The needle was directly in the middle of the last quarter mark. And again it should be near the last mark right now but is right below quarter mark. Anyone else have this problem?

Your owners manual will explain that the guage is only meant to give an APPROXIMATE level. However, I've had my sending unit replaced twice in my 04 because it wopuldn't show full when filled. There's a TSB for the sending unit but I'm not sure, other than the 04s, what other years it covers.
I ran out of gas with needle nowhere near the last mark. Will an extended bumper to bumper warranty cover this issue? Reason I ask was a dealership near my house, not where I bought it, would not replace the striker, the stud the tailgate latches to, because of an outside force. I still need to go to the other dealership to see if they will fix that.

Yes it should be covered. I've had mine replaced 3 times. Twice under the 3 year / 36,000 and once under the 5 year / 60,000. I forget the coding but it falls under engine/tranny warranty.
i've run out of gas with the needle at exactly 1/4 of a tank line 4 times over the last 3 years. had it replaced twice and checked 3 other times. the sending unit or float inside the tank is a piece of shat. even now, it'll show 1/4 of a tank and then all of a sudden, bamm, its on the empty line.... yeah, guess you can consider the 1/4 line the empty line, but that's ridiculous... i'm used to it now though... lol
Yeah... Not even 15,000 miles into my new Titan.. Seemed like just yesterday the salesman was talking me out of being a Dodge owner. Once you've gone Titan you'll never go back! First the broken gas cap on second fill-up and now this.. Just took several workmates out on a business lunch. Fuel gauge read 1/4 tank.. Then it ran out of gas! Sorry fellow colleagues... Biz has to wait. Clearly we can't count on Nissan. To top it off.. I'm in Austin, tx. Nissan Roadside sent some poor towtruck driver around DALLAS for 2 hours looking for me. I"M IN AUSTIN! This guys says it happens all the time! I finally get fuel 3 hours later and take it immediately to the dealership. Fuel sending unit obviously, but parts says they can't keep their shelves stocked with this unit. Meanwhile management "has never heard of this problem"... yeah right! Still no Recall??? on any of this? F*&# Nissan! They paid me two years free oil changes to shut up about the gas cap problem. What now guys? How you going to suppress your crappy product now?

I always reset my trip computer with each fill up, I know what the max that I can get out of my tank and if I ever get near that, I will fill up anyway. I have never had this problem, but it am waiting for it :)
i ran out of gas when my fuel guage said that i had over 1/4 of a tank, but the best part was i was pulling a full trailer on HWY 46 between paso robles and the 5 freeway and no one would stop to see if we needed a hand. the dealer replaced my fuel guage, it seemed to be working correctly but a few days ago i noticed it seemed to be taking it time to get up to full after filling up

 You just joined to make a single post in a gas gauge thread complaining about everything else as well?

Nice first post, very productive...welcome to TT. I think.

I have an idea. Sell your Nissan and go buy another Dodge. If it's as bad as you claim, why keep it? Nobody makes a perfect product, not even Dodge.

you won't get any sympathy from me. happened to me over 4 times. btw, you sound like a white-collar type of guy, colleagues and all, but let me ask this. what [email protected] sits around waiting for 3 hours to get gas? i've walked miles after running out of gas. one walk took me close to 50 minutes round trip. still not as long as 3 hours. and i suggest getting triple A like me... but even then if i know there's a gas station within a few miles i'm walking my dumba$$ to the gas station. hell, i've even gotten migrant workers cutting grass to give me some of their gas. and if all else fails, go buy a pos dodge. used to have a dodge dakota and i can give you the horror stories i've had with that POS dakota!!! also, gas caps cost less than 10 bucks... any idiot knows that, why not just get a new one?

I've tried to find the TSB from this site and nissanhelp. Can someone please post the details of the TSB related to the fuel gauge/sending unit?

thanks
thanks hooligan..i did see that TSB, but was unaware that it applied to both problems...always full or needle wont go to full.
Is everyone's low fuel warning light not coming on?

i've only had my truck for a month and haven't ran it that low yet, but my guage won't completely go to the "full" mark so i was thinking about getting it replaced.

mine comes on and it'll sit just a hair below 1/4 of tank and it'll stay there for like 60 miles or so and won't budge, then BAMMM, all of a sudden it drops to the E line. what pisses me off is it won't slowly drop to E... the year is 2007, the world is packed with technology, yet we still can't get a f*cking gas gauge that works right.
OK hear me out on this one I'm not sure I have an issue with the fuel gauge or not.

When I go to the pump to fill up; the gauge will go almost full when I get back in the truck, BUT by the time I get home (< than 2 miles) the needle will have made it all the way to the top and the tank looks full, you know it's a little above the full mark and you have that warm and fuzzy feeling of a full tank :)

I get back in the truck (parked on level ground) the next day and the needle reads half way between full and 3/4's same thing happens, start it up and drive a little and presto the tank is full again, it's weired I know, if the float bulb was leaking the needle would read lower all the time it not empty all the time... The first time it happened I was sure somebody was stealing my gas, I even setup a video camera to watch it overnight, yeah yeah I'm paranoid I know....

On the other side, we drove from Fort Mill, SC to Raleigh, NC AND BACK two weekends ago on one tank of gas, as we were going through Charlotte on the way back I got a warning on the dash display saying 36 miles until empty, first time I ran it this low, it's weired I have the NAV and everything is done through that screen except washer fluid and door open warnings, so I was expecting it on the nav screen but no, I had 36 miles to go on the dash warning system, so I popped off and got a little juice to make sure I got home.

In conclusion when its full I'm not so sure and when it's almost empty it's screaming at me to feed it, however given the inconsistency on the full side it may read 36 miles until empty and in reality it may be closer to empty than I think !!!!

Should I have the dealer change the sending unit ??????

Or is this consistent with other Titan Brothers....

first off, love the avatar! and, hell yeah, i'd have the sending unit replaced. i CAN'T believe you're having the same problem many of us have had with our fuel gauges and your's is an 08.... incredible. i've never had a vehicle in my lifetime ever have gas gauge issues... ever! and i'm sure 99% of other titan owners would concur. this is just ridiculous!
Hey, this is just a follow up to my older post above.

There is no real point to this post except to show my faulty fuel gauge in action, I was bored this morning so decided to make this, (wife is in New York for the weekend :) ) the camera work is weak, it’s just me holding it with my right hand, and on occasion you can hear my radar detector picking up the Walgreens automatic doors….

There are two videos, one is the full length video no breaks, fade in’s etc… (i.e. no way I could have stopped for gas during the video about 16 minuets in length) the second is a much more condensed version (about 3 minuets)

Ohhh and I have a Canon HV20 - HDV 1080i camcorder, BUT when you upload to google video the quality is reduced 100 fold, but you can still get the general idea….

Short version. About 3 mins

Long version. About 16 mins

I have it booked for service on Tuesday to have the sending unit replaced….

This is a bunch of hooey.....Nissan really needs to fix this issue. I just dropped my 04 crew cab off at the dealership on Friday for a leaking fuel tank and misleading gauge. My wife noticed the smell of gasoline last wednesday and I climbed underneath to see a small stream of fuel running down the tank.

Dealership says that I need a new tank and sending unit. I specifically asked if the new tank would be an updated tank or should I expect to replace the tank again in 40,000 miles. Service person told me it is an updated tank. After this post, I'm not convinced that it will an updated tank.

$1,300.00 USD fix, maybe by wednesday....
