ive been shopping around for a motor oil that is good on a budget and wont break the bank. I see the major auto shop stores have their oil at a lower price than other brands like Mobil or castrol. Im currently in a 2007 SE offroad titan. had it for a couple months and love it.

Looking for a "budget oil" isn't a good idea for your Titan. Why not look for a good quality, name brand oil on sale at any of these parts stores, rather than use their house brand? Search this site and look for UOAs on the VK56DE to find more info on where to look.

thats a fair point. I did see on a prior thread that some use Walmarts Supertech oil. anyone have any thoughts on that brand. main goal is to make the cost lower than what it would cost me to get it serviced at a shop. if the cost would be more, then doing it myself price wise would seem pointless other than the feeling of doing it myself.

But doing it yourself gives you the security of knowing that you actually put new oil in the truck. There are dozens of stories where the service stations removed the oil and didn't fill it or just wiped the old filter clean and left it on.

Agreed, you can't distrust everybody, but there are enough shysters out there to ruin it for everyone. It's your vehicle. Take care of it like YOU are paying for it. :dunno:

Mobil 1 full synthetic plus Mobil 1 filter. 6 quarts and a filter on Amazon for anywhere between $35-$45 (I usually stock up when they're on sale). I've gotten filters for less than $9 each and 6 quarts for less than $30 before if you just pay attention to price drops. Typical quick-change shop will charge $70+ for "full synthetic" of whatever is in their can. I change my oil every 10k so about once every 9-10 months. Takes me maybe 15 minutes tops to change it out.

I've been one of those guys that the shop screws over. They never drained the oil just put "new" oil in. Had 11 quarts in it. For something this easy I'm not wasting the time or money on some kid trying to destroy my truck.

Have been running Castrol full synthetic in both my nissans for about 100k and I am happy. I like others will stock up on it when it's in sale at the local A-zone, usually around $30-40 for 6qts and filter. I start thinking about changing the oil at around 4K and it usually gets done between 5-6k. Oh and don't forget the crush washer I get OEM. Any good full synthetic on sale, doing the work yourself, will save you money and know it's done right. Oh and most parts places have some type of rewards program that can save you even more.

I agree with LaxDfns15. I've also found that Wal-Mart usually sells the 5qt and single qt jugs/bottles of Mobil-1 for the exact same price as Amazon (I swear they just watch Amazon and copy whatever price they have). For as "often" as you have to change you oil, just cut out a few cups of coffee every oil cycle if you're on a budget and get the better stuff.

If you're really that worried about then I suggest looking at UOA's like someone mentioned before.
I've been changing my Fram synthetic filter every other oil change and using Napa synthetic 5w30 because I had a bunch of it given to me.
I'm going to look at UOA's before I decide on what I'll have to start purchasing.

Haha I noticed that when i was shopping around, in short i know where ill be buying my oil from. I ended up going with a castrol highmileage synthetic blend since it was on sale and a FRAM oil filter. ill report back after my oil change endeavor. my wife cant wait until I do it so I stop talking about it.

Jeez! If you drove very long with 11 quarts, that would surely mess up your truck.

How long did you drive before you noticed the problem?

Mobil 1 0w40 and Purolator pl14610 oil filter you can get the 5qt jug at Walmart for 22.88 and its a truly synthetic oil with great low temperature flow and amazing shear strength. Very good at cleaning as well. Even though it's a 40wt it is thin for a 40wt making it perfect for are trucks.

FRAM is one of the crappiest filters, IMO. You don't hear of filters failing much, but when you do, it's a FRAM. My dad had one fail, my brother-in-law had one fail and one of my uncles had one fail.

They are one of the cheapest on the shelf. Think about that... there's a reason.

Repeat: FRAM is CRAP in a box!

If the rest of you have had good luck with them, good for you. Go buy a lottery ticket. But the clock is ticking... I guarantee it.

I noticed it near immediately, but I didn't connect it to the oil shop. It would run rough at idle, but be fine when accelerating. I thought it was all air intake or MAF and couldn't figure it out. Eventually took it to the dealer (the one near where I lived was really cool so they said they'd check it for free) and they found the oil. I ran it for maybe 100 miles like that, they said there was oil everywhere.

Back when I was an Amsoil dealer I had several documents on oil and filter tests and found that FRAM was the worst oil filter you could get. I was shocked as that's all I used until then. WIX and MOBIL 1 is the best ones. Having said that FRAM air filters were among the best.

I used Castrol Syntec and Bosch filters but sometimes I feel fancy and buy the Mobile 1 filters. On my my bikes I mostly use Rotella synthetic and either Harley or K&N filters.
