mpg with tow package

my dealer told me that the gear ratio would be the same unless i engaged the tow mode. if i do not have the tow mode engaged, is it affecting my gas mileage. i wanted the towing mirrors and he told me i could not just get the mirrors and put them on a truck that did not have the package for them. not that i am too obsessed about gas mileage. i bought a big truck. i was just wondering if i was taken for a ride. if the gas mileage is very different i may consider trading down.

The difference is not huge, I have had both sets of gears now and haven't noticed much of a decrease at all. You can always add the tow mirrors later but it will cost over $300 to get them new.
The BT option does have different gears than non BT. Your salesman did lie to you. All the tow modes does is change shift points so you hold gears a little longer. I took a 1700 mile round trip back in June and at 80 mph I averaged 16.5mpg. I have never owned a Titan without BT so I don't know what the mpg difference is between the two. Plus the added bonus of having BT is that if you ever need to tow 10K you can. Don't trade down. There have been numerous people on here that never thought they would need BT only to find out that they did.
Yeah I am one of those people and ended up spending almost 2k so far to get it at and above the BT specs.
i have a 4x4 CC without BT, and average about 15.5 mpg on California gas, i drive 75-80 average. I went without BT for the better gas mileage. Now that i'm in the market for a travel trailer, i'm learning the hard way that the extra 2000 lbs of towing that BT gives you, also gives you a heck of a lot more in trailer selection as well.
BT is worht every penny they charge for it. IMHO
Spend the extra now and not have to worry about it later.
I have a 2007 with BT and get about 17-18 on the highway (at about 75 mph) and 11-13 in the city depending on how I drive
My 2007 get's about 14-15 mpg
I have been seeing 15.5 to 17 mpg on the highway with BT on my 2007. I am logging 385-400 miles per tank full with premium, 340-360 miles per tank with mid grade, both no ethanol fuels.

You will want the big tow package, it doesn't hurt mileage that greatly.

Douche-bag saleman!
I can't tell you how many guys here have bought a non-tow Titan and then need to tow!
I would NEVER buy ANY truck without the factory tow package and lower gears if offered!!!
Actually we're pretty lucky, the Titan has a great cooling system and it's the same for both non-tow and tow. All the big 3 trucks need the tow package to get the HD cooling for both engine & trans...

GET BIG TOW!!! It is only a 500 dollar option but is worth a lot more than that. I don't think the difference in MPG would really matter. The biggest thing i see in MPG diffrence is 4X4 vs. non 4X4. I have a 08 KC 4X4 BT getting around 13-15 M.P.G
thanks guys. great input. i am convinced that i am lucky i got the tow package. the salesman is still questionable. live and learn.
I have had both and a lot of my driving is in town so it really didn't matter what gears I got.You will tell the difference in mpg on the hwy but very little in town.I love the lower gears.
I would always recommend the lower gears espically if you lift it!! Plus they seem faster!
I get 14-15 local, suburbs. I've gotten 18.75-19.3 Highway speeds. THis is with BT, see sig below.

Sorry to see you got a bad salesman, at least you got a good truck from him! :)
i may have made him sound worse than he really is. i got an 05 le crew cab 2wd with 25000 miles on it with all options except no sunroof for $20500. i felt so good about that deal (don't tell me if that wasn't as good of a deal as i think it was because if it wasn't i don't want to know) i just think he may have represented some knowledge that he evidently was sure of. he was a toyota salesman that drives a z. i did like that about him.

An LE CC for $20.5K with that mileage, i believe that is a $3-4K less than blue book. I'd say you have reason to keep smiling!
Just filled up on the way home, 15.5. It seems like the mpg is getting better as the engine breaks in.
Get the BT. I had an Armada with the BT and traded it in for Titan without it, big mistake. My gas mileage got worse and I notice a big difference in the towing capabilities. I only tow about 4000lbs, but I could tell that my tranny working harder and shifting alot more. My gas mileage on the Armada was 14-15 in town and 16-17 on the highway, it was stock. The worst that I got towing this load was 14mpg. My Titan can't get better than 14 on the highway with the listed mods, I got about 11mpg towing the same load. :wtf:
