my volant vibrates like a SOB

i bought a volant CAI off a member last week(shipped as promised:cheers:)
i put it on yesterday and man this thing vibrates horrably. so i took out the box, foamed it all over so there is no contact w/ the box to fender at all besides the bolts. it helped a little bit but its still unbearable. i called volant today and told them what was happening and he said he has heard this alot. he said its nothing vibrating, its the resonance from the air inside of the intake itself. i said ok and hung up. i looked at it some more, messed w/ it some more and cant get it to stop. it sounds like the whoosh of the intake is making something under my dash rattle. i cant tell. if i put my throttle body spacer back on would this help do you think? i have to get this fixed or this intake has to go.... thanks in advance, Clint

I have the same intake with a TBS and it is a beast at certain rpms....

It has to breath and the right foot controls that....

All i can say is that is part of it....

Big badass motor loves the air !!!

Good luck...

I love mine, but it is not a sunday drive vehicle with granny unless you are going 20-30 mph max...

You're hearing the sound resonance that is amplified by the fender opening, sort of an echo chamber. My S&B startled me the first time I heard it. I tried several different things to eliminate it but none worked well. I'll bet if you used that spray undercoating in the fenderwall that would help. The other solution is to add a ram air to the front side of the intake box and close off the fender opening, I heard that eliminates the resonance.
I too have the same issue. The only thing that helped a little was taking the lid off when I am not towing. The 3000rpm mark with a load in 3rd is crazy loud when its all together.

wow hey if youre thinkin of gettin rid of it can you let me know id like to purchase it thanks in advance!
And I think I've heard some folks say to use the stock bolt in the bottom of it, and tighten it up well. The Volant is a great intake, but is known to be loud.
Ive got both stock bolts in mine and it is still loud.
The stock bolts will help the vibration issues some have had, but the Volant is just a loud CAI.
I've noticed my Volant only does this 'vibrating' at certain RPM's vs gas pedal depression. I just put the pedal to the metal and the vibration goes away and is replaced by a huge grin on my face

sudden has it right. You can tighten up the box and pad it all you want but unfortunately the resonance is still going to be there. It's coming from the fender well. I've had the Volant and the S&B and it was there with both of them until I did the ram air mod AND sealed off the original opening at the fender well.
you should have purchased the originator of CAI's... K&N, i have no issues with my 77 Series and its been on for over 3 years.
I think volants are loud in general. I had one on my traillaxer and that thing vibrated like crazy and into the cab.
Ive got a Volant CAI and the tbs, and my vibration isnt that bad. The intake, tbs + my 18" exhaust combination sounds great btw!i have the 05' KC Titan. My buddy, however has an 06' CC Titan. He bought the banks exhaust, a tbs and the Volant CAI and he has makes an insane vibration. I felt bad since I suggested he buy it. Dunno why his is so bad, but it is. Seems like a hit and miss situation.

how much do i need to cut off the intake tube to compensate for my TBS. i desperate to fix this vibrating BS
If it's rubbing, just trim a very small amount - enough to clear the shroud.
Damn so that's what that vibration is. I thought it was the damn cover of the box flapping between the screws. Almost sounds like a loose bracket banging around at certain rpm's.
OK...we know it's a resonance issue.
Has anyone tried a vibration dampener in that area, like dynamat?
My is just a little unbearable at 4k, but aside from that I LOVE IT!!!
If anyone has tried some kind of vibration dampening material I would like to know if not I am going to do it myself. Dynamatting the area around the fender should reduce the resonance but let the cai scream all it wants.

Someone said something about the foam, but I foamed mine up good.
That is a negative ghost rider the pattern is full.

I have. I put dynamat across both the bottom and side areas (anywhere and everywhere the box might touch), and it did nothing for the resonance with either the Volant or S&B. Unless you make some changes inside the fender well or re-direct the airflow via a ram-air mod and close off the original opening, it's just going to resonate.
my vibration went away by itself yesterady. sort of wierd. i looked at my filter and intake tube to make sure everything was still hooked up and it was. so im happy for now

I just had the Nismo kit installed. Heard the rattling, and this was exactly the problem. Where the box has a gap in it near the driver's side front. Between 1400 and 1600 rpms it rattled like Hell. I took it back to the dealer and pointed at it (was easy to find in my case luckily). They adjusted and weatherstripped it. Rattle gone. Hopefully the rest are that easy.
