Okay, I am pretty gullible when it comes to trucks. I know my motorcycles and have restored many but have never really upgraded a truck so here goes. The first phase is to lift the truck and get larger wheels but the catch is I have a budget.
What would the average lift kit cost, say for a 3 inch lift. Is this the standard height most go with?
I'm wanting bigger tires too with a more beefier look. What do those run?
Many more questions to come.
Thanks for your help.

Depends on if you are 2wd or 4wd and what year, once we know that, we can give further advice and prices. What size tire are you wanting to run?

Most popular 3" lift is probably the Rough Country. It's the same price as the 6" Rough Country though at $1,000 last time I looked.

Actually the 3" kit is only $349...The 4" is $1000 as is the 6", but there is a big difference between the 3" leveling kit and the 4" bracket lift. PRG sells a modified Rough Country 3" kit with Bilsteins for $730, or their own 2.5" kit for $870. There are many other option, but again depends on what your budget is, what you want to accomplish, and whether your 2wd or 4wd. We haven't even began to touch on spindle lifts....

I have a 2004 Nissan titan and it does have 4 wheel drive. Is it necessary to level the truck when lifting or is that 2 separate issues.
The size tires would definitely be wider than the factory that are on now and probably slightly larger in diameter.

Fishinalaska, I like the tires you have. That's what I am wanting.

Leveling and lifting are basically the same, but with lifting it requires a bracket lift. Think of leveling as anything below 3" and lifting as anything over 4" With a 4wd you don't want to go over about 2.5" with just a leveling kit as you can cause issues with your CV axles. There are a couple ways to go about the 2.5, depending on budget. You are going to need aftermarket Upper control arms (UCA's) with 2.5", typically these run $300 TO $620 depending on the quality. Easiest/least expensive way is to get the Rough country 3" kit as mentioned above and throw on a 1" block in the back, this is known as a mini lift. OR you can go the other way and get a really good quality kit, pieced together for about just under $1000, you will need to get an alignment after all is said and done. The RC kit is gfine and many have run it without any issues, I ran a modified one similar to the PRG sells, that I mentioned above, before I upgraded to different UCA's (Dirtking bushing UCA's for $525).

I run the 3" Rough Country with 2" blocks in the back. I think I'll drop to 1" at some point though as it still has a bit of the stink bug look. I've got a couple years on it with no issues.

So I called my local mechanic and informed him of my plan to raise/ level truck 3 inches and he told me to call him back at the end of the day after he does some research. I told him I would just purchase the kit myself from rough country and have him install it.
When installing this kit, is it pretty straight forward or will there be major modifications involved?
How much would a mechanic charge for such a service?

Your looking at 3 hours labor with the new UCAs if he quotes you a good price. The directions are very straight forward. Since yours is an 04 I would not add the rear blocks as your gonna still have less rake in the front than the 08+ Titans.

Don't forget to get it aligned.

If your running stock wheels you can go 305 65 18 which is 33.6 inches tall and 12 inches wide. Or 325 60 18 which is 33inches tall and 13 inches wide with trimming the inner finder or pinch weld as its called. 275 70 18 is 33inches tall and just a tad wider than your stock tires.

If you go a wider wheel that sticks out from the truck it is harder to go with taller tires due to rubbing when turning.

I went with the 305 65 18s and a wider wheel. 18 by 9 and zero offset that gave me about an inch of height over stock. I did do a pwm to make them fit. Tire Vehicle Automotive tire Pickup truck Motor vehicle
