Need thoughts...Titan hauling an ATV and TT

I need your guys opinion on something. I have a 2012 Titan 4x4 with the tow package, premium utility package, Tekonsha P3 brake controller and AirLift Air Ride airbags. I haul a 2011 Gulfstream AmeriLite that weighs in around 5300lbs with a tongue weight of around ~630 lbs. I want to know if I can haul an ATV in the bed of my truck that weighs in at 620lbs.

I figure I am right on the edge of my truck's GVWR:

Truck Weight = 5300lbs (I don't know my exact truck's weight, but this is the curb weight that everyone states)
Passengers Weight = 430 lbs (200+130+50+50)
Misc Stuff in truck plus some addtl cargo = 200 lbs
Total Weight of Items Above = 5390 lbs
Add Tongue Weight of Trailer = 630 lbs
Total GVW = 6580 lbs
Add ATV = 620 lbs
GRAND TOTAL GVW = 7200 lbs (I swear this is by coincidence it was exact)

So, what do you guys think? Am I pushing it to carry and haul this much stuff?

I towed my RV, 26' north trail at 5300lbs
Easily w my big tow Titan.
I'd add my ATV and try it.

Thanks guys. Cayers1122, I would go out and try it, but I don't have the ATV yet. I'm debating on buying one. The only thing left is to make sure I can pull the TT with the tailgate down.

I've loaded my ATV in the standard bed, but it won't fit w tailgate up. So that sucks. If ur tailgate is down make sure you can tow the TT without hitting anything w the tailgate especially when making hard turns.

Yea do check that. I can't even drop my tailgate with my TT hooked up. It hits the propane tanks!

I would not tow a TT with the tailgate open. Crunch! Also the tailgate does not support too much weight.
I gave your question some thought. The weight of the ATV in the short bed would add to your tongue weight. So if you have 660 lbs of TW from the TT and your T supports 940 lbs, that would leave you with 280 Lbs. and that would be with nothing in the front storage compartments of the TT. It may be too heavy. Perhaps you can explore this. Do they make a tray or platform that you could secure onto the back of the TT wide enough for the ATV? You could add a Class III/IVHitch to the rear of the TT.

Go trade your TT in for a toy hauler and you can have it all :)

You can tow with the tailgate down, well you can't make turns towing a TT with the TG down. As far as weight technically I think you will be over the payload amount but not by much and to be honest you would be fine. You would have to adjust your WD hitch with the ATV in the bed. Well maybe not. I hauled my 600ATV in the bed many times and I don't the bed dropped an inch.

One last question for those who have hauled an ATV, or other item of similar weight and height.....how is the stability of the truck? Is it a little or a lot more top heavy? Anything I should be careful of stability wise?

The one thing, as others have mentioned, I don't know is if I can pull, and maneuver, the TT with the tailgate down. That may answer all my questions right there. Unless the rear tires rest on the bed and I can remove the tailgate completely (I highly doubt it though), this whole thing may not even work. If it doesn't work, I guess I will have to look into other options.

Thanks again all!

You will not even know it is in the bed.

I doubt your tires would touch the bed. Will you be able to haul your ATV with the TT sure. But you were concerned with weights. You would probably be close or over the max. Only way to know is get it weighed.

I would add air bags, but I wouldn't feel bad about doing this at all. A lot of people at the local races I go to do this. The truck won't handle much different unless you get a huge atv. Someone here was worried about the tailgate not supporting weight, I assure them tailgate can easily support an atv. I've loaded an 1000lb golf cart up an ramp into the bed. But with a atv and tt you'll need something helping out the rear suspension. I would recommend airlift bags, they can be had for around 150 dollars I believe, easy to install yourself.

The only worry is that you may have to relocate your propane tanks or jack if they are to close. Many people don't realize that you do not need a ton of clearance between the tailgate and a jack because the jack in the center will never get closer when you turn. The propane tanks are the biggest worry.

I'm looking at either the Arctic Cat 450 Core or a Polaris Sportsman 400 H.O. They aren't anything huge or impressive, just a basic ATV that can carry me through the rocky mountains without stressing out the ATV.

The interesting thing is that the AC is fuel injected and the Polaris is carbed. The Polaris is approximately 50lbs heavier though. I'm not exactly sure which way I'm going yet. But I'm not going to start digging in until I can figure out how much room I do/don't have between the tailgate and TT. I'll answer that question this weekend.

My wife has the sportsman 400 ho. She loves it. Imop if your not a experienced rider it's perfect. Being fully auto is nice when first learning how to ride. I myself am into sport quads but I was impressed on the power and handling on the polaris.

I really want the FI model, but the shade-tree mechanic in me is worried that I would not be able to work on the FI components if need be. I know can do the carb work at home, or on the trail. The other part I'm debating about is since I live in Colorado, in any given time I could be riding the ATV on the plains at 2500ft then the following weekend riding it at 11,000ft above treeline. FI would compensate for these changes, the carb doesn't like those changes as much, and I don't want to have to re-jet for each ride.

Planning in playing in mud? If so id personally stay away from the polaris and the artic cat. I did alot of gncc raceing and had a chancd to ride alota of quads and put thrm through any thing i could put at them. I had alot of drivetrain promblem with the polaris. The artic cat i just plain didnt like
I'm not planning on playing in the mud so much, it will be more of riding and hauling across the plains and trail riding/hunting in the mountains. Mud will be part of it, but not the deep stuff.

What would you suggest?

If the gear can fit I wouldn't worry to much about the weight. I tow my 28 ft TT with a Polaris Haweye and a Raptor 350 stacked upright in the bed. Inside the cab I've got three 200lb guys and all the gear needed for a two week camping trip. I tow this combo over 1500 miles twice a year with no problems and all I've got are some ride rite airbags. I'm probably overloading it but its always worked out great :teethmast

I would say go for it! I just came back from Arizona to Alberta Canada with my 05 Titan SE Ext. cab 4x4 & tow package, 6.5' box with a Rhino 4 seater in the back (rear tires resting on the tail gate) Dry wieght on the Rhino without the extras is 1280 lbs, with the extras I'm guessing at least 1350 lbs. Behind that I towed a 22.5 foot boat that was approx 4500 lbs. No air bags or added support! Through the mountains for 1700 miles no problem!

I used to have a 06 Titan SE 4X4 with standard bed. I use to haul my 29' Flagstaff with a golf cart or ATV both with the tailgate closed. It will do it but the Titan worked extra hard in hilly areas. Also, after getting it weighed I realized I was at the max and I was abusing the truck beyond it was designed for. It was allowing wear on the suppension, transmission, and engine. I even had a leaf spring assist system on it and it rode very well with a weight distribution hitch but I knew it was still at its limit. I traded it for a 08' Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins diesel long bed. It hauls the trailer and ATV/Golf cart without even breathing hard even in the mountains. Don't abuse the truck just to prove it wil haul all this. I loved my Titan and was hoping that Nissan was going to release a diesel Titan heavy duty but it all fell through. I would buy anther if they do!:)
