My '05 king cab 4x2 with 167K miles is in nice shape. Runs great. Rolls good. Stops good. Took it to the dealer for an oil change, and on the receipt they listed the following recommendations:

Spark plugs $489.95
Valve cover gaskets $469.95
Oil cooler seal $189.95
160K mile service $299.95
Alignment $89.95 (just aligned 5,000 miles ago when new struts at another shop)
Coolant flush $149.95
Trans flush $189.95
Power steering flush $129.95
Lower radiator hose $249.95
Rear diff service $149.95 (just done at that other shop)
Rear brakes $199.95
Total $2,609.45

Wondering how many of the listed items are actually included in the $299.95 "160K mile service" ... and if NONE, what the hell do they even do for that 300 bucks??

Anyway ... I guess by these recommendations my truck must be a rolling disaster waiting to happen HAHAHA!

If I remember (it's been a while), aren't the spark plugs on a 100,000 mile interval?

And even if you wanted to change them now, $500 for spark plugs + installation? They're only ~$10/plug and a monkey with a deep socket wrench could change them out in less than an hour. Sounds like they're trying to pull a fast one on you...

I went to get the oil changed on 2015 titan at the dealer ( maintenance agreement) at 32000KM, on the bottom of the W/O it recommends flushing then brake fluid at a cost of $375 as pointed out by the service writer.
I have driven some pretty shady crap vehicles over the years that have been dragged off of farms , out of the bush and putting them through safety checks to put them back on the road and have never considered "flushing" the brake fluid or changing it unless I had to do brake work!
If I went by the recommended the Nissan maintenance schedule I would have flushed it twice in 32000KM, a waste of resources and more importantly my money!
ALL of my other vehicles have not required the maintenance this truck has "required", it's a money pit if you go by the "recommended" schedule.
So the moral is be wise and don't fall for their Crap!

I suspect that the service writer is on straight commission and has bills for alimony, mortgage and Xmas to deal with.

There's a lot of pressure to up sell customers at dealerships. I know, worked there...
The only thing my truck has gone to the dealer for is warranty work. The last shop I worked at is very good at keeping an eye on things, so when they say it needs this or that, it gets done. Both our vehicles get serviced there and we have had no problems at all, just routine maintenance.

I used to work at dealership service departments back in the day. You'd be shocked, seriously 70-80% of customers would get that recommendation and say "oh, OK. Go ahead and do it all then" and turn around and go right back to the waiting room. cha-chaing!

At 100k miles I changed trans fluid, front and rear diff fluid, transfer case fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, spark plugs, PCV valves, brake fluid for around $250. All it took was a couple hours of my time (spark plugs mainly).

But yeah, you'd be surprised how many people see the recommendations and say "Ok change it" like Turbo said. Every time my wife takes the Maxima in for a recall or warranty work she always calls me asking if such and such needs to be done for whatever exorbitant amount of money they want to charge.

If you plan to keep a vehicle for a long time then a brake fluid flush is a good idea. I had a '91 Ranger that had the brake lines rust through from the inside. I flush the brakes on my vehicles about every two to three years. With the right tools it is a one man job that takes about 20 minutes and costs less than $20.

FYI, the 160K service includes a lot of "inspections" and "just look at stuff":

160,000 miles/194 months:

Replace engine oil and filter
Rotate tires
Replace brake fluid
Inspect CVT fluid
Inspect axle & suspension parts
Inspect brake lines and cables
Inspect brake pads, rotors, drums & linings
Inspect drive shaft boots
Inspect engine drive belts
Inspect exhaust system
Inspect front suspension ball joints
Inspect fuel lines/connections
Inspect fuel tank vapor vent system hoses
Inspect steering gear and linkage
Inspect steering linkage ball joints

The rest of the items on your list are just "recommendations"... some because they either saw something that made them suggest maintenance, or just looked at the mileage and thought, "if they haven't had these things done yet, they are due." It's really up to you, the customer, to look at the list and say, "I have had that done recently so we don't need to worry about that," or "Geez... yeah... I haven't done **** to maintain this truck. That's just really stupid! I'd better get on the stick here!"

Honestly, I get stuff like this every time I take my truck in for the free state inspection every year. Sometimes there are things on the list that I haven't done or just don't feel like being bothered to do. So, I may let them do the messy crap. But it's all the responsibility of the owner, not the dealer, to know what has been done to the truck.

I know this sounds like I'm sticking up for the stealerships here... I'm really not. I know they are out to make money on unsuspecting or unknowledgeable customers. I don't let them do things that I can do and I've done enough of my own maintenance on my vehicles to know when it's a line of **** and when it's something to which I need to pay attention.

Bottomline: If you know better, and the services have been done, ignore it. If not, and you don't have the time or the skills, pick and choose what you want done. It's just that simple.

Is this automatically done whenever you get new rotors and/or pads? If not, mine's never been done in 167K miles.

No, it's not. They may not even bleed the brakes if they think they can get away with it.

My guess is your fluid is somewhere between midnight black and obsidian black. Time for a change....
