First of all, this question is actually about my wife's Maxima, and not my perfectly running Titan. I thought I would post on this forum because I figured you guys would be able to help me anyway... So enough of buttering you guys up :)

When I turn the HVAC unit on in my wife's car the left side radiator fan makes an terrible noise, sounds to me like the bearings in the fan are shot. Clearly if the fan is not running then the engine all sounds normal. So here are my questions:

1) Should I just be able to buy a new OEM fan shroud and replace the current one?
2) Seeing as I live in the Northeast where it's getting pretty cold now, can I unplug the electrics to the fan so that it doesn't come on, while I am waiting for the replacement to arrive?
3) General question - Why does the fan come on when the HVAC unit is turned on even when the engine is cool?

What do you guys think?

All that butter and no popcorn?

Make sure it's the fan motor, not the mounting as the Titan has a TSB about a noisy fan, but it's the mounting...

Although you can try disconnecting the fan, I think there will be a overheating issue. It may be colder, but you still need air to flow thru the radiator, and in traffic and slow speeds that may not happen with no fan.

Very common to have the fan running while the a/c is running, and many cars also run the a/c compressor while the defrost is on to keep the air drier...It's a factory thing...
