Hey everyone. Please help me out. Was going to leave for work while ago and went to put truck in drive. It got to reverse then like fell down to drive. Let off brake and then noticed it stay in reverse. Didn't shift down. So went to shift it into park and noticed, no tension what so ever on the shifter column. It's not grabbing at all.

Could it be the linkage broke or is there something in the column that could of given way? It is an 04 so wouldn't be shocked what it is. Please help me out. Gotta have it cuz it's my daily driver.

Also does anyone have any diagrams showing the column and what it could be? Thanks.

I would try looking underneath, I don't know if you can see the linkage on these or not and see if it's connected at the transmission. Is it 4wd? You can probably look at auto parts diagram on a vendor site to see how it comes together I don't know of any write ups but maybe search for others with that issue. It sounds as though something just came disconnected though.

2wd. Read something about with the 04 and 05 a plastic piece in the column deteriates over time and that can cause it. Hoping it's that or the linkage itself under the truck. Didn't have time to do it this morning but when get home going to be crawling over it.

Done some digging via computer and found a thread on here that describes my problem to the t. Small plastic grommet wearing out on the cable pin. So gonna check that out when get home and do some either zip ties or see about a rubber grommet or something. Is to be expected, was made in may of 03. So she got some age on her.

Yea. Why in the world would they use plastic grommet on a part that is going to be used daily and moved everyday. Have no qualms about doing a snap ring or something to it.

I'm curious now to take my console apart to check what they used on the '08 model. I want to say design flaw or a test run that they've hopefully taken care of in the newer years. But definitely go for something a bit more permanent.

Yeap. That's what it was. Hardest part was getting the covers off. And kinda tight too actually. But was able to get it zip tied on there good and tight. She'll be back on the road tomorrow.
