Hey guys I've been a lurker for a while, but have made a few posts. This is bothering me. I haven't been into DIY mechanics for long at all, so today I cleaned my air filters for the first time (still hoping I did it right.) I was at Autozone and realized I haven't changed my oil filter and it's an 06. I think it's about time, but I have no idea where to begin since I've never changed oil before in my life (pretty spoiled by my parents and didn't have a drive to learn in highschool days.) I really would like to get to know more about my truck and work on it more, baby needs some love am I right? I've googled how to change oil filter but nothing came up, just hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks for your time -David

Ummm... I hate to sound brutal. But... you may want to just take it to a lube place to get it done and watch them change it for the first time. Take note of the tools they use.

Right up on top of your skid plate. Take it off and you'd have to be blind to miss it. Drain the oil, and change oil and filter all at same time.

Ok, thanks. I've seen my dad change the oil before, so I can take it to him and watch him change it. So after I drain all of the oil, I should take off the filter then? Because I'm thinking if I do it before then everything is going to get really messy haha. Also I do know that you're supposed to get oil inside of the filter before installing it or running because someone told me if you don't then it can get really hot and be hard to take off in the future. Do you know the best method to get some oil running through it?

yes drain the oil first then take off the filter. (drains better when oil is on the warm side) it will still be a mess because some oil is still on top of the filter housing but there is that little runway for the spilled oil to drain down. (which isnt long enough IMO). and yes put some oil in the filter before reinstalling it. and as you can notice from the pic above the filter is at an angle so you cant fill the filter up all the way. bout 3/4 full. and take your finger and dip it in some of your new oil and lube the o-ring thats on top of the filter to get a good seal on the mating surface between the filter and the filter housing. the filter does not need to be wrenched on there really tight either. just get it a little more than snug. you'll be fine bud. just take your time, dont rush it, and dont forget to put the drain plug back in.

Thanks for all your help. While I have your attention, there's just a few things I want to do to my truck overtime to improve it. First thing is the K&N. I've got to save up almost $400 to get it though. Does anyone know a really good parts site to go to? I'll be wanting some stuff. Engine-wise: K&N, new spark plugs would be nice, maybe and that's a MAYBE some new cams and valves (far future). Suspension: I would also like to look into getting a leveling kit, just a leveling kit though, I can not afford a suspension lift atm. Cosmetic: New grille/emblems, maybe a few bada** nismo ones for if I ever get my dream catbacks :*) and some fender flares would look cool. Anyways, if you guys know a sweet place like that with good prices, let me know. Thanks again guys

when you say k&n for 400 bucks i assume you mean a CAI (cold air intake), and before you get your heart set on buying a k&n look at this threaad from this site about intakes that states the hp gain and ft/lbs torque gain for each intake system. here is the link.

http://www.titantalk.com/forums/tit...tions/30324-air-intake-systems-list-poll.html

new plugs would be a good thing to do cause they do wear out after time. again assuming that you still have the stock ones in there. and about the cams and valves, i dont know why you would want to do this but then again i wouldnt be the person to talk to about that subject. and leveling kits are cool and make your truck look night and day different from stock, sometimes i wish i would have just gone with a level kit instead of a full on suspension lift. and i wouldnt want to reccomend any places to get all of these things but i would say keep an eye out on the forum, members are always posting stuff up for sale. looks like to me your getting a good list of stuff you want to do to your ride going......but beware, once you start its hard to stop. its an addiction. lol

Great thanks man. Do you have any other links like this that can compare hp/tq for engine/intake/exhaust parts?

Buy a used one from one of the guys on the forums here... a used one is fine. Most filters are good for 100k miles as long as you either blow them out or oil them when needed. Depending on what type you buy. You can get a very nice used one for well under $200. I have the Volant CAI and I love it. Feels like there is so much more power with it. Plus, it adds a deep enging tone when sucking in air.

Leafjerky,
Changing your oil is not rocket science and although you are apprehensive, after the first time it will be a snap. You don't say what you have, but for the 2WD the most difficult part is removing the skid plate. I believe the 4WD Titans have an access panel in the skid plate. If you can have you dad or a friend help the first time and show you a few tips it would be great.

One more word of advice. List what kind of Titan you have and what options you have in your signature. It will help others who are trying to help you. Take a look at my sig or others around here for examples.

Nixonnow,
You gave great advice to a newby. People like you are what this forum is all about. Thanx.

Ha thanks for asking doyle, I've been trying to get a job at the local oil place around here since I'm currently unemployed(which sucks). I haven't gotten around to it yet mainly because I need about $20 for the oil. I wish they sold QS Q Horsepower around here because I heard some good reviews on it, but I'll probably just go with whatever Advanced Auto has. I can say it's probably going to end with my face covered in oil haha

David,
I work as the Tech Manager at FRAM filters. We have several "how to" video's on our website to help you along. I can also email you the OE instructions if you email me at [email protected]. Seems the guy posting right below you has also posted some really good instructions as well. If you want to learn about filtration, we are running a technical education promotion right now at Framchallenge.com. You log in, watch a video once a month and answer some questions. Lots of prizes being given away for learning. It's not a Fram advetisment, I promise you that. :hi:

Hello All,
I am a newby in this forum and I think I am in the right thread. I just changed oil and filter in my 2007 Titan XE and when I changed the oil filter I noticed the base on the engine where you screw the filter on is much larger than the base on the small oil filter. I installed a Purolator PureOne PL146190 and it is a small filter. Do they make a larger filter that will match the full size of the mounting base on the engine. Why would they make a large mounting base on the engine to put on such a small filter? I would think they would have a large filter for an engine that takes 6 1/2 qts of oil on an oil change? The filter I took off was even smaller than the PureOne. Has anyone found a larger filter to replace these small filters?
