Installed PML pan and torque to specs given. I did have a very slow leak at the drain plug where Matic-S was starting to seep out. I think 20 ft lbs is a little low for the drain, bumped it to 30 and no leaks yet. Anybody had an issue with these pans leaking...at the drain?

I used supplied drain plug with copper washer

yeah 25 ftlbs would have been ok. I just used a bit if dum dum on the threads (grey gear oil RTV) let it squeek out and wipe down prior to fill...:wink:

PML also had a low bolt torque for the fill on the rear diff cover as well.

Cool, thanks Andy,
I'll be watching it closely for more signs of seepage. I can't afford a steady diet of Matic-anything

I just installed my PML deep pan and I also had a leak at the drain plug! I torqued it to 20 in lbs like you did and noticed seepage around the pan. I snugged t some more bur didn't use the torque wrench. I just used a 14mm box end wrench. we'll see. I was ticked though! I also used teflon tape on mine before I threaded it in..

Teflon tape isn't a seal option. Ask any plumber with a license. It is designed to provide lubrication to the tapered threads of metal to metal plumbing since the taper creates the need for exponential torque as the fitting is tightened. For sealing, such as a gas line, they will use a paste called pipe dope to aid in achieving the seal...not tape.

In your case....If one piece of the tape brakes free and starts running through the tranny....need I say more? A good new copper washer is all that's needed. If you must re-use an old one, then anneal it first. Put it on a piece of charcoal, hit it with a propane torch until cherry red and let it cool naturally. Good as new. Use a torque wrench and you will not leak.

Well, when I threaded the plug in just to see how it felt the threads seemed a bit loose. That was the main reason I used teflon tape. I was careful to keep the tape LOW on the plug, only covering the first 4 or so threads next to the bolt head as to not be exposed at all in the transmission. There should be no way for a piece to make it up 6 or 8 more threads and into the transmission, but I get you. I torqued the NEW copper washer that came with the pan (it should not have been crushed at that point) to 20 lbs as I said before. I am not a novice at this and have been doing this sort of thing for 40 + years. The pan SHOULD NOT be leaking under these circumstances. I am going to try a nylon washer next. The factory washers are nylon if I am not mistaken and do not leak until maybe after 20 drains or so..
