I upgraded to a newer Titan yesterday and it came with a nice, throaty exhaust. Unfortunately this thing is almost unbearably loud in between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM. It makes talking on the phone while driving pretty difficult.

Here is a picture of the exhaust itself. It looks like they decided to end the exhaust just after the muffler instead of having it run out to the normal exit location.

My questions are:

1) If I extend the exhaust and have it exit in the normal location, will that help the noise? I assume that the echo off of the bed of the truck could be the culprit?
2) Is there anything else I can do to quiet it down a little bit?

I don't really want to drop $400+ on a new exhaust if I don't have to, but I'd also hate to have new pipes installed that exit in the normal location only to have that not fix the problem. Any advice is appreciated!

You should be able to take it to an exhaust shop and have them put tail pipes out the back of the truck don't go out the side I am regretting that myself right now

I don't mean I want them to exit out the side of the truck in front of the rear tire, I mean just in the stock location. I probably wouldn't have them out the back just because I don't want to clip them while off road.

I suggest getting that Black Widow or Flowmaster muffler off there as its going to be loud what ever you do. I highly recommend just switching to the JBA 40-1400 catback system. Its a great system and works well with the Titan. The JBA is all mandrel bent and stainless while using the stock hanging locations. I can you a system to your door for $425. Thanks for the info nightowl. That's too bad since it sounds really good every other range except that 1500-2000 RPM area.

In regards to that JBA system, is it a bolt on system or will I need it welded? I've also heard good things about Magnaflow...any thoughts on that? I'd really like for something that sounds a bit throaty, but it can't be so loud that I can't have a phone conversation in my truck.

BTW it's a dual in and dual out muffler. Based on what I see, Black Widow and Flowmaster might not make those?

JBA will be the best bang for the buck. I think you will have that unbearable drone 1500-2000 rpm with the jba as well, just not as bad as your current setup. There is a lot of info how to get a "hush kit" on these trucks if you don't have the OEM system. Jeff nightowl at cajun can fix you up with everything you need except gaskets.

Thanks danman, I'll have to look into the hush kit as well. It's funny, but the JBA sounds almost identical to my current exhaust when I pulled it up on their website. That makes me nervous to spend that much money only to have the same issues.

As I said, everything outside of that 1,500-2,000 RPM area sounds awesome, so maybe a hush kit would do the trick...

So the more I look into this, the more I see that the exhaust drone that I'm getting can potentially be fixed by lengthening the pipes, which could help change the sound frequency. Any exhaust expert out there agree or disagree?

I have a 2005 Titan and it had the drone problem too. Back then, I bought a muffler tip from www.zoomersexhaust.com and cured my problem. I'm not sure if they still carry it, but you can call them. It made the exhaust sound great when needed but eliminated the annoying drone. You have to cut a few inches off of the end of the tailpipe and either clamp or braze it on there. I brazed my second one because someone stole the first one I bought which was a clamp type.

Extending the pipes won't help the drone. I have the JBA catback and had the same horrible drone before I got a resonator. Get a Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator to go on the pipe near the spare tire and that drone disappears. Can only be done if you extend the pipes, but you'd need 2 if you extend both pipes without merging (I have a single in/single out muffler) and you'll have fit issues if you try to do that.

First thing you should do is replace those chopped off pipes with the normal length and see how it sounds. No question that it should sound MUCH better! Then if you still find it to loud, add a resonator , but any solution should start with pipes that don't dump poisonous gases under your bed or close to the cab.

No reason to replace the entire system if its in good shape. This would be the least expensive fix and you can always change out exhaust parts forward of tail the pipes down the road if you lightly clamp them on and dont weld anything

also, i recommend staying away from running dual pipes out the back. There isnt good clearance for a pipe on the drivers side and it will rub your brake anti skid line and parking brake cable. I had to zip tie those away from my pipe, and when getting a new exhaust went back to the oem side exit....much better and cleaner install, although I do miss the duals coming out the back aesthetically

Try the Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator. It quieted my Catback way down to a nice sound.
