Ok guys so I got a speeding ticket about a month ago and ever since then I've decided I could put a radar detector to good use. They didnt catch me with one the first time but it would make me feel a little more comfortable on the interstate and in town occassionally.

I really dont wanna break the bank on one, but I am just looking for something to offer me a little better protection. I've looked at the Valentine and a few others but I am thinking that is a good bit more than I would like to spend.

So do you all have any suggestions on what to get or what you have?

Thanks,

Sean

I have had good service from my Whistler, real reasonable ($50), and good warnings. The one I have has noaa weather radio built in too.

Got it off of ebay about 3 yrs ago. :)

haha $50 sounds like a good deal to me if it works good. I'm basically looking for one under $100, I mean i dont do 70 through town im not stupid i just want a little help alerting me when I'm on the interstate going to work and to hang out in town and everything.

i was in your same position, and posted up almost the same exact question not a month ago. All i got was "you get what you pay for" and "slow down" answers.

I found a few cobras at frys that seem to have good reviews, and were right in the $50-$60 range. I borrowed an x50 passport 8000 from a buddy at work, and that thing is NICE. but its about $340.

these are from $50-$100. and of all the places i looked, fry's had the best prices. If you dont have one local, shipping may defeat the purpose.

valentine and Escort are the highest rated detectors. I run an Escort 8500 in both my Titan and my WRX and they work like a charm. on a wide open road, I can get a signal from beyond a mile away. I like the fact I can turn on the K & X bands and eliminate 99% of false alarms.

I hate to be the one that's going to say "you get what you pay for", but in this case there's no way around that.

The only thing you might hope for is to pick up a used, QUALITY detector.

When you're talking about a detector's ability to help save your butt, it's sensitivity and selectivity you need. You won't get those in a $100 detector. Sorry.

I was in the same boat about a month ago. I decided on a Cobra 9750..or whichever is the best one they offer. I had a gift card so it wasn't much at all, but I don't regret buying it at all. About 90% of the time it's false alarms, but it does detect cops IF they are actually using their radar detectors...most state cops however use their flip on laser tagging so it won't help you much then.

It gives me more of a secure feeling, but like said above it only saves your a$$ if you drive smart.

I've got a V1 and it's saved me a few times. It's not as compact as some of the newer offerings from Escort or Bell, but it's got the directional arrows and you can upgrade it (for a small fee) as new technology becomes available.

It's true the more expensive units will have less false alarms, offer greater detection, have more bells and whistles and will alert you earlier. But, as BBF said, you've still got to be "smart". They all work and will "help" with reminding you to slow down. Get a model from a reputable company for a price you're comfortable with and drive smart and stay alert...

Valentine 1. It's worth the money.

Easily installed remote system.
Only unit that is built to be upgraded as technology improves.
Multi target tracking. Up to 9 and tells you front ,rear,or side.
Uses standard telephone cords for wiring, so it was easy and cheap to install cords in each vehicle permanently and just move the unit.
Best specs.

Buy direct from the factory and you can save money on an open box unit. Same warranty.

V1 is the best value, just like the Titan.

I wouldnt spend money on anything but a valentine 1 or a escort 9500. Anything else and your better off just driving the speed limit.

I have both of these units. I have had the V1 and no tickets for the last 5 years. I drive about 50k a year. I decided to buy a second unit for my Truck (local driver) and went with the Escort 9500ix? It has the GPS and remembers where the falses are. It is extremely quiet, most of my alerts, especially on KA band are real. Look up radar detector reviews and you will see why most will say that you get what you pay for. I'm not saying that there are some less expensive units that will work, I just haven't found one yet. You should also look for an older Escort 8500 or BEL unit that will be a little cheeper.

If you HAVE to go cheap, I have heard really good things about the Whistlers ($30-$70 from what I have seen online).

I would also recommend the V1 though, have it in my sports car and LOVE it!

Just dont speed.. all a radar detector does is let you know you got caught :)

Anyway, if you DO get pulled over and the officer sees that u have a radar detector you will most likely get a ticket!
I always think its funny when we get behind a person who has a radar detector in their vehicle, and flip the radar on, and off, on and off.

Too funny PD! When I was younger I was following my friend back to turn in the cruiser and he was doing the exact same thing to me! He tells me to keep up with him, and knowing I have a radar detector he flips it on and off. My instinct was to instantly slow down... then I realized wtf I am following a police car hahah.

It is quite humorous, usually people get the point of what we are doing and unplug it until we are not behind them anymore!

Lol I have to admit that is kinda funny. For right now I bought a cheaper Cobra off a friend who sold his truck. I only paid him $20 for it and I'm pretty much just gonna try it out and then I'll decide if I want to step up and get a nice one or just stick with the speed limit lol
